Here in Devon rain is forecast tomorrow. I was going to take Fly to his first outdoor show since I have had him to enter the 2ft 3". Would you still go if it is raining? I have no stud holes and am a bit worried although the jumps are low. We really do need a good day together confidence wise, what would you do??

We are going hunter trialling tomorrow whatever the weather. the good news is, if it is wet, less people might turn up, thereby reducing the competition

Since it is your first show together, just look to get round at a comfortable pace, wet ground is only a problem when you pick up the speed - they may adjust the course for the conditions

we have sjing tomorrow, will be going if wet as we are up 1st class so grass will be not to bad.

I'mmeant to be going to a show tommorrow (showing) me and my dad have come to the conclusion that if it's raining we aren't going because we are wusses (sp?)! rain is forcast up here in south yorkshire as well!

Yes you should still go, we're going jumping tomorrow despite the forecast, the last couple of our outings have been in Monsoons. It would be better to have studs in but providing you go for the steady clear without any heroics then you should be fine. With a new horse it's best to go steadily & you will both gain confidence rom the experience. Good Luck

I would go. The only time rain puts me off is if its an enter on the day show which Im not really THAT keen on anyway!

But if its only 2'3 and it would do your horse good (TBH I think it does a youngster good to get used to competing in all conditions) then I would go. If it is wet then I would simply trot round gently (or at least round the corners) since you dont have stud holes.

I was supposed to be show jumping today, but although we have studholes in, it isn`t worth slipping and injuring my horse. It doesn`t take much to slip on take off or on a turn. The way I look at it is that I do it for fun, not as a career or job so it isn`t worth the risk as there are lots of other shows next week. The better weather is here soon. This is just my opinion as I have had a horse fall in a show jumping competition and it took a lot for both of us to build our confidence.

MP, I'd say depends on the horse & also your circumstances. If, for example, you've got your own transport & opportunities to go out often, then I'd be more inclined to cry off - however, if you only ever get the occassional opportuity, maybe I'd be more inclined to go.

That said, safety comes first. Do you know what your new horse is likely to be like? I mean, is it possible he's going to be very excited? If so, do you want to be dealing with that on slippery ground? Is he sure-footed? If not, are you risking slipping without stud holes? Is he quite green or nervous? If so, could a slip worry him & cause a stop? I think you need to have a think about the full picture before making your decision.

Blooming weather...
