What can we do to get rid of this once and for all?

Saff has had it since we got her in January, we've tried:

Picking the scabs off everytime we groom her,
Week of antibiotics,
Sudocream,
Hibiscrub,
More picking scabs off and then hibiscrub and sudocream.

BUT 7/8 months down the line and its never fully gone, she's always had the odd few scabs and now its come back really bad again.

What can we do to finally rid her of it?

Phone the vet - it shouldn't still be hanging around after this length of time - it might be something else and you probably need to skin cultures done to find out exactly what it is. We had a pony with a similar problem and it turned out to be skin mites which needed a totally different treatment.

I looked after a polo pony in Aus like that - in the end the best thing to keep it from looking like a train crash was iodine wash - its brown and was really affective, not sure if you get it so strong over here though - much more so than hibiscrub&the likes, hot clothing with detol too was good for killing the nasty skin bacteria - its horrible stuff!!
Good luck

Hmm Vet it is then!

Its horrible. And she's got wise to us picking them off now and throws a complete strop if she thinks you are going to pick them.

No, she's ou 24/7 at the moment, plenty of shelter though.

Does she use it though and really dry out?? Probably not.

What did the vet prescribe when you initially have him out? Did he take skin scrapings??

She does dry out? She is not permanently wet over her back - is that what you mean? Don't quite understand?

To be honest i am not sure what the vet did as i was not there, but he prescribed something to be put in her feed twice a day. It seemed to clear it up a bit but it didn't completely get rid of it.

My chestnut got very grumpy and scabby last year, made grumpier by the endless picking of scabs.. I fed him something called Skin Mix from Pegasus herbs, the scabs cleared up within about a month and he was a much happier ponio for it. I don't work for them or anything, I just found that it really helped!

I don't mean anything horrible by that at all btw...its just its been soooo wet lately and having ponies that live out 24/7 myself I know how hard it is for them to dry out especially if, like me, you have wet paddock too..

Hi

My lads just had rainscald for the first time and I asked for help on here not too long ago! which was a great help when I'd never experianced it myself! Thank you to all that replied! x

Anyway I have been washing the area twice a day in a antibacterial/fungel shampoo drying the area well and then applying Wonder Gel by Gold label! and have to say it's almost gone! Over the last few days I have knocked the anti shampoo on the head and used a tea tree type shampoo - and we are still making good progress! But if you decide to use the wonder gel I have been advised not to put it on when theres strong sunshine!

I hope that you manage to find a cure soon!

Fay x

My mare has had appalling rainscald in the past, see my webshots for pictures of the devastating effect it has had on her skin. This all happened about 9/10yrs ago before I got her and she is still largely bald on her back

You really need to get a grip of this condition to prevent a similar situation. I would definitely get the vet again. Other than that it is imperative that you try to keep her dry at all times. Either in stabling or rugged. Ellie is now rugged 24/7 as I cannot risk her getting sunburnt or being wet over prolonged periods.

You need to get all the scabs off and I personally would use Camrosa on the area then. If neddy won't let you pick the scabs put camrosa on anyway and they will come off without you picking

But dryness is the key!

Your ned may need some antibiotics though so I would check with the vet. Good luck!

get vet again. keep in if you know weathert is going to be wet or even put a light weight rug on. clean with aloe vera shampoo leave to soak well when scabs are soft then peel off and apply tea tree oil on the affected area!

Easiest way to get the scabs off is coat her back really thickly with cream and stick an old outdoor rug on. After two days the scabs come off on the rug (that's why I said old).
The best thing I've used is fungatrol from I think Equine America. It kills the fungus causing it and it then heals.
