My four year old who I have only had a couple of weeks has what I think is rainscold. I've never had/ seen rainscold but it looks like mud fever on his back and over his bottom (incidentally he also had mud fever when he arrived).

Is this what rainscold looks like? If it's not what might it be?

If it is what should I do?

My TB mare got it years ago from being out in hard rain. It came up as puss filled scabs on her back, nice.

She was treated by the vet with anti biotics but most of the care involved me pulling the scabs off every day and cleaning with salt water. It all cleared up nicely, no scars and she never had a problem again.

Hibiscrub diluted or salt water, my horse doesn't get it now, years ago when I had a pony that lived out, I didn't know much then, we used to put vasalene on it, I have heard parafin, the vasalene worked but is messy. I would give your vet a ring to see what they recommend, depends what stage its at, as MM says her horse's was infected so best to check before you go slapping stuff on
