Good evening! :)

Just wanted to drop by and do a quick report on our recent trip out competing.

We headed to Swalcliffe to the Horse Events ODE, first event totally solo as I hired a lorry and couldn't convince anyone that they wanted to stand in a field on the side of a hill in the wind and rain giving me a hand, understandably so! Luckily though a (totally none horsey) friend with fancy camera did come along to take some photos - I know how you all like photos!

As you all know, I don't have my own transport and nor do I have an arena - I had been feeling a little miserable recently about the lack of 'progress' and feeling quite limited, like I need at least one or the other! But luckily I do enjoy hacking, and we have a lot of hills, which is much needed when you're all shoulder and no bottom like King.

I touched on a move known as 'The Prancing Giraffe' in my last report, this is the move that King likes to include in his dressage tests, which doesn't get us very good marks. But to be honest, at the moment, as long as we stay in the arena and I don't fall off it's a job well done.

I'm pleased to say the good bits are starting to make an appearance, so we improved by a whole 8 marks this time out for a still pretty bad 40.5.

Warming up, this was much more successful than last time, as I managed to actually do more than walk around in circles for fear of being bucked off.

So that's the horrible bit out of the way, onto the Showjumping!

He was a little wild warming up, King likes to do everything at 100 miles an hour, especially when it's been a while since we've jumped anything. But in actual fact I felt we had a much nicer, more controlled round than last time. Unfortunately I now have it in my head that we have uprights down, usually speed related... so this time I held, and held... and held some more just to make sure we had it down through lack of speed this time. But over all a nice round for 4 faults.

Onto the XC, anyone who read my last report will know that I was so nervous prior to my round that I honestly considered thinking up an excuse not to run. I am pleased to report that despite this course being much more up to height and complicated, I was only excited. King felt the same, and refused to do anything other than either walk or canter...

Anyway, as per usual we had an amazing round, he is just always looking for the next fence. He is super quirky, and a bit of a moron, and I'm not sure he will ever do a good test, but he is just the best fun to go XC on! We are however always far too fast and get stung with time penalties... I need to work on that...

Starting to feel like my confidence is slowly returning, even though it may never be what it was I am so happy to be out and finally enjoying what I love. At least I know now if I have another accident, it will have been just that - an accident, as he will always look after me.

I feel like we could be ready to try a 90 now... but without being able to train finding it hard to know whether it would be right to do so or if I should stick at 80... decisions...

Fab report! It's lovely to see your confidence bouncing back now you've got King. The Trakehner photo is wonderful.

I say go for it - he seems to have tons of scope.

Lovely report, it's so nice to hear of someone just getting on with it who isn't hugely confident and going on your own as well! Makes us mere mortals live in hope we can achieve more.

You both look great and you look like you could easily try 90 but only you know if you are ready.

Excellent report and some cracking photos! Love the prancing giraffe :D, and to solve the too fast problem just go up the levels ;) you both look like you have loads of scope to go much further! Lovely to hear your confidence is returning :D well done.

Fantastic well done you! We are doing our first BE80 at Broadway this weekend and I too suffer from horrendous nerves (I cried before my last SJ class!!). Well done :)

I'm in love with those photos! You're a very neat rider, look to be soft in the hand and I can see a lovely partnership between you two. He looks super stalwart through the jumping phases.

Is it bad that I like the prancing giraffe? Yes head is up but look at his movement! Tracking up beautifully from behind. I'm sure when he does it more he'll chill out during the test and the ribbons will come. P.S on point horse-boot to shirt colour matching.

Great photos, he is a really smart looking horse and you look really good together. I am sure you will go far with him, you certainly seem to both be enjoying yourselves.

Great photos, especially the Trakhener pic!

You need to stop being so hard on yourself though. You may lack confidence BUT you go out and you do it - heck, you even done it alone this time!!

Yay you!! If you manage to get the 'prancing giraffe' with a soft neck then your dressage marks should really go up!

He looks fab! And having one that will do the dressage but not really the other two phases I can safely say you've got it the better way round ;)

Brilliant photos and very well done on your confidence returning; I don't post that much but I have been following your story. King looks like such a lovely, fun horse to have around; I think you're probably ready for a 90 but that is up to you! Hope the weather is better when you next get to go out :)

Thank you for all your lovely replies and comments.

I'm very proud of him, and really excited about the future.

I think I will bite the bullet and start entering 90s now. It wasn't so long ago 80 looked very scary!

Thank you all for sharing my journey and being so supportive!

Well done for braving the weather! It does look a bit down-poury in some of the pictures. I really like the look of him, he's a lovely stamp of a horse, just my type. So great to hear you're getting your confidence back, I'd say just go for the 90, its might look big and scary to you but he'll probably love it and look after you. :D (I have a looker after who just does it regardless of height, I'm normally to one that causes the problems so I speak from experience :p)

Aww I do love King, even when he's being a Prancing Giraffe  I'm sure the dressage will come, he's got the movement, he just needs to learn to love it.

You're both definitely good enough for 90's but I wouldn't blame you for trying a couple more 80's first just to cement that confidence. Difficult when you haven't got transport though as it does get rather expensive for a day out.

Looking forward to the next report :)

Thanks guys - watching Badminton feeling like i need to get back out there again! Love it.

Quiet month this month, due to me spending time away with work - crack on again next month. :)
