Horse has raised heels on hinds because of hock problems. Just wondering if the fact that we are in a very hilly area would make things worse when going downhill due to extra angle of feet etc ?

Wedges on any terrain will cause the pedal bone to land toe first. Long term use can lead to soft tissue damage within the foot, and all the associated issues. I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole, personally. My vet agrees that they usually cause more problems than they solve, and my farrier said that these days they are taught to avoid using them.

I'd certainly advise a frank discussion with your vet and farrier about them and possible alternatives. I find I get a better response from professionals if I do a bit of research on the subject first, so perhaps do a bit of googling to help yourself make an informed decision about what's best for your horse in your particular case? :)
