Raised Temperature after Annual Flu Vaccination ..

My horses had their annual jabs yesterday. This morning my old boy was very quiet, however when we went out for a very quiet sedate hack round the block he seemed fine

On return I noticed that he was standing hanging his head low and my riding friend also commented

I then took his temperature (at lpm ish) and found it to be 101.8’F … so quite near the 102’F ‘call the Vet’ margin

I then turned him out and took it again at 5.30 ish and found it to be 100.5’F. He seemed perky enough although quietish (sp) and quite happily ate his tea ... which is something he will not do if there is any excuse whatsoever ATM

His normal temperature is 99.5 ish.

I have put it down to the Annual Jab …. anyone else had this happen to their horse?

Yes, Toto had his jabs yesterday and was not himself today

. His throat glands were slightly swollen, but he seemed totally fine. My mum said they didn't look swollen, I thought they were slightly, mum said just ride and see how he is so I rode him quietly for 10 mins but he wasn't himself so brought him in, tucked him up in his stable and he passed urine, pooed and was eating hay. Went to check on him a few hours later and the glands weren't quite so swollen, and he ate his dinner and again seemed totally fine. Was going to check his temperature but he can be a bit iffy around his tail (he broke his dock at some point in his life

) and I don't think he'd let me stick a thermometor back there. If he's still not right tomorrow then we'll call a vet, I'm really worried about him

Fortunately my old boy doesn't mind what I do to him

.... do you not know what happened to your horse's dock, and how it got broken

The first thought that popped into my head was strangles!

But hasn't got a snotty nose, and the glands were only slightly bigger than usual. It just worries me, he's never been ill since the day we got him. Sending *vibes* to your horse, hope he's ok.

As for his dock, no, we don't know what happened to him, Toto hates having his tail washed, plaited, bandaged, anything to do with his tail. He hunches his back and turns to look at you, really scared. The dock's all crooked if you pick his tail up, it bends to one side. Poor boy

My vet always warns me that horses can run a slight temperature after their flu jab. It's not happened to me yet though.

I've always been told to rest a horse for 24hrs after a vaccination, as the chances are that they will not be 100% (even if behaving as normal).

Now I have heard that but my Vet has never commented at all .... however I would never expect them to 'work' hard for at least 24 hours .... however a plod round the block is ok I think IMO ... the horse in question has restricted turn out and I try to ensure he gets out a couple of times a week at least to keep things moving

This is the first time in 17 years that he has reacted like this and I have looked and it is the same vaccine he has had for many years .... but my main concern is something else going on like Laminitis .... as he is a Cushings horse

One of the horses on my yard felt very under the weather the following day after his jabs. His temperature was 104!! Obviously called the vet out and he ended up having three visits and a week off, before he was back to normal. The vet had used a different vaccine to his normal one and to give them their due, they sent all my liveries vets bills to the drugs company to settle. The horse in question is a native cross and never has a sick or sorry day ever. His glands were up as well and he was very very stiff, couldn't get down to eat his hard feed, but didn't really want it anyway. Hope your chap is feeling better now.

The vaccine works by simulating the virus and therefore there's an immune response. This ups the horse's temperature.
Different batches will produce a slightly different reaction and obviously you dont expect an extreme reaction but a small increase in temp I would view as a good sign!!

my two ponys had there tet and flu jabs last week,id say 2 days later feeling very sorry for themselves,ate there feeds ,but not struck on hay so tryed hayledge,they looked like they didnt know what to do with themselves,very quiet,one got a snotty nose,so gave them the week off,took the mare for a walk and got towed everywhere today,they have never been like this with previous jabs.
