I'm looking for a new rug for my 5 year old Appaloosa. I like the look of the Rambo Duo, but also seen that the Amigo Bravo 12 rugs can use the liners, have a detachable hood and are 1200 denier, whilst the Duo is only 1000 denier, and the Bravo works out cheaper.

Anyone tried both rugs?

Don't know the Amigo but I've used Duos for the last 3 years having used loads of different makes in the past and would now never buy anything else!

Yes - I have both rugs.

The difference is that the Rambo is made from Ballistic (closely weaved and used for bullet proof vests) Nylon where as the Amigo is Polyester. Nylon is the creme de la creme when it comes to horse rugs. ;) Yes, it's only 1000d compared to the Amigos 1200d, but it's tougher and really waterproof.

My Amigo 1200d is 3 years old and it's still waterproof, but it's starting to frey in places. The Duo was bought when they very first came out and apart from a new front clip it's in far better condition than the Amigo despite being older.

The oldest Rambo that I know of was a purple Wug that was 14 years old when it was finally destroyed by some barbed wire. I'm sure that it would have lasted longer if it hadn't met such a spiky fence.

So do you think it's worth paying the extra and going for the Duo? My girl hasn't got the best history with rugs and there's usually always something missing off them by the end of the winter

I've got a original Green (with the red binding) 5ft 6" Rambo, done sterling work since it was brought new the 1st year they came out!!! (special offer at local tack shop & I had just sold a pony so we splurged on it!)
Its in far better condition than 2 yr old other rugs I have. Been used every winter up till end of winter 2011 & never leaked nor broken - had fillet string replaced once tho as another stepped on it & it snapped rather than the rug giving!
Feel I should mount it somewhere in the yard :D & no idea what to ask for it 2nd hand anyway.

Perhaps someone can tell me when they DID 1st come out - am struggling to remember if it was 1988/1999 or 1990 :o

Well... yes, they are worth it if your horse doesn't trash rugs. If it's likely to be destroyed and therefore replaced every 2 or 3 years, then the Amigo would do the job perfectly and your bank balance would be happier!

I only have one Duo as they are so expensive, but I have four Amigos (the chestnut has the Duo and the Amigo that I posted about above - she really looks after her rugs. The TB has two Amigos and the grey has one.)

The grey only gets sale rugs now because she destroys them. I have two Rhinos that she ripped to shreds. :( Luckily I was able to patch them up enough for the gelding to use for one winter before he outgrew them, but the are more patch than original rug now.

Wow that's the winner! :D

I think that 1990 sounds about right. I'm sure that someone will know. :)

I'm trying to decide whether a better quality, harder wearing rug is likely to be a better investment than a cheaper rug that's likely to get ripped and have to keep replacing?

Do you have barbed wire?

RE, your other post (Duo v PE Trio) I didn't get on with the PE rug that I had (not the Trio though, it was the 600d lightweight one) as it leaked from day one in only a light shower and it was cut too big around the shoulders for my arab.
