I know it's only July but with this weather of late it has got me thinking about winter rugs and which one should I get for my mare.

I need to get her a heavyweight turnout rug. Now I have always bought Horseware rugs be they Amigo's, rhino's or Rambo's. I love them. They are excellent quality, last for years and seem to fit my horses perfectly. My only real gripe about them is the neck covers, especially on the combo's. I don't find them big enough. They only ever seem to fit 3/4 of the neck, they wrinkle and end up half way down the neck and are not thick enough etc.

So with that in mind I can't decide whether to go for a Rambo supreme. a fal viking or a weatherbeeta Orican. The weatherbeeta looks a good rug and is considerably cheaper than the other two but is it robust enough? The Supreme will live upto it's name, but what about that neck cover? and the Fal might be a bit tight accross the shoulders like my m/w one which caused a bit of rubbing.

I would very much appreciate the opinion of you lovely folks and based on your own experiences help me decide which one to go for.. My mare goes out for 10 hours a day in the winter, she does feel the cold but is not usually clipped as she doesn;t grow much of a coat.

I have found the Horseware cut fits everything-from native ponies to thoroughbred yearlings. The rugs never rub and almost seem to float over the shoulders.I buy Amigos for the youngstock as they are outgrown before worn out and Rambos or Rhinos for everything else.
I do have some FAL rugs which are excellent quality but not quite such a good fit.

I have a weatherbeeta taka which has survived everything I have thrown at it and still looks like new after a quick spray down with a hose. I have a slumberdown as well(cheapy fal) which is also still looking good and I like the fastening for the neck cover - it zips on so really does stay put unlike some of them .

I have both I have a Rambo that Ive had for about 9 years and Weatherbetters which had for about 5 so its a hard one. Id say Rambo if you want something for years and years

Ive got weatherbeeta Taka's and ive been very impressed, ive been using one for about 4 winters and it is still waterproof, it never seems to move and the neck never sags. I brought a Orican last year for my cob as didnt want one quite so heavy and that is a lovely rug too!!

Weatherbeeta orican freestyle, for me everytime, for the money, they last and have never had a problem with them, and a good fit on big shoulders, necks and bums.

RAMBO!

For future reference - I'm HorseWares Number 1 fan..I know, a very sad claim but still

Like its been said already they fit everything. However i think 9 times out of 10, WeatherBeta are cheaper.

I have always had Horseware rugs but last year bought a couple of weatherbeeta's - a Landa middle weight and an Orican, both freestyle. The main reason for this was the tail flaps as our fields have no shelter and are on top of a hill. They got lots of use and by the end of the winter I noticed that some of the velcro was fraying and a couple of the seams on the lining were fraying so I am assuming they won't last like my 15 year old Rambo's that are still in good condition and waterproof!
The necks do fit well, I did however buy a Tristar in a sale and the neck on that is very big.

Rambo rugs every time! I've had some of mine for over twelve years now, still as good as new, despite washing and reproofing, and still do the job.

Another vote for Rambos here. That's all I buy now. I have the same issue with the neck covers but think they are still worth their weight in gold. I've had a few weatherbeetas in the past and they just don't cut it as turnouts, for me. Like the stable rugs though.

What size is your horse? I bought a mediumweight Supreme last year, and the 6'3 I needed comes with a medium size neck. (6'6 and up come with large neck). I bought a large size heavyweight neck to go with it, which is huge and toasty warm, OK, the binding doesn't match but my horse is cozy from ears to tail.

hmmmm...
rambo are lovely, tough and fit well, but necks are too small for my lot who are very well muscled so i normally have to write to them and they send me a larger neck cover.
Fal i love and find the fiit quite generous, i now normally go for fal over rambo, just as tough too.
Weatherbeeta are yucky- too heavy and mine seem to trash them too easily.
Now i just buy nice new Fal rugs and my horses stay in these for stable and turnout.

i used to love weatherbeeta rugs untill i got my boy a heavey weight for the winter as he lived out he's really shortly coupled only bein 6"3 in a rug and he has a super short neck lol but i find that weatherbeeta rugs tear far to easily especially when al the boys are playing out in the field now its a big field they are in over the winter and there are 20 of them the same group all year round but it only is my heavy weight that gets majorly wrecked as they try to warm themselves up and play so i'd say try a rambo i had to almost sew the neck cover in half on my weatherbeeta rug it wasnt a combo either but i'd be careful cause if they are on alot they do tend to rub the top of the tail people thought my boy had sweet itch lol its still growing back

I have a 16.3 IDx with a big neck, who is fully clipped, and my sister has a welsh x Hanoverian who is a wimp with the cold.

they both have rambo rugs. my lad has a supreme, and the neck on that is a bit more generous than on the rambo plus. it's brilliant, love it, and it's lasted us 4 years so far, with no sign of wear and tear as yet!

my sisters horse is a bit of a nightmare with rugs because he like to lean on fences and gates. the rambo plus he has has stood up to most of it though. His is 6 years old, and will probably have to be replaced this time round because he has taken the clips off the front! twice.

IME weatherbeetas don't stand up to much wear and tend to be too narrow on the chest for our lads.

Fal are expensive, but everyone I know who has them say they are brilliant and well worth the cost.

Rambo's for my three, two of mine I have had for nearly 6 yrs, still in good condition and totally weatherproof even though I have never reproofed them.

I personally favour Rambo Supreme with the detachable neck, perfect for Norwegian climate and a clipped horse.

I am a WB girl as the rambos never ever fitted my xw cob even with the extra chest piece!! he looked like a porn star bursting out of her clothes. it was very funny!!!

the new freestyle didnt fit him well either so i was very pleased when they reintroduced an origional range. I have had my orican for 7 years now and i had to replace the leg straps and sew a patch on but other than that im happy.

if you have the cash go with rambo as all my friends love them and rave about them- if more of a budget go woth WB although the taka are pricey but do work as well.
