I want to buy some new turnout rugs for my horses for the winter, I believe Rambo is the best make (I've tried many other makes but they on survive a winter or 2 if your lucky!) but which design do I go for? As I will be buying 6 so I thought I had better do some research first!! Thanks

no idear idea type.. where possible i normally go for detachable necks..

bit of a tip.. go through the smaller companies and as your spending so much ask for a discount!! i used to get a few bargins this way

I have a selection & they are all different fits so it's worth trying someone elses or making sure you can return what you buy.

The new style ones are fantastic, pretty much the same actual 'rug' as the older ones but nice little touches to improve things - covered fillet strings, safer surcingles, better velcro closure etc. You can get the older models a bit cheaper though so depends on your budget.

I love the wug style and also the newer rambo wug plus is a really good rug which fits both of mine well. The duo fits my cob type beautifully but not my TB - same as the supreme and the original fits my TB but not my cob.

The neck sizings seem to be a bit hit & miss too so if you're buying separate neck covers make sure you can return them. The original neck covers are definately NOT the same sizings as the duo.

I love Rambos, wouldn't buy anything else :D

I dont know about Rambo being the best rug, a rug is only any good for someone if it fits and suits their horse, and thats going to vary.

Design to go for? What design do you need? I like no necks or full necks, dont like detatchable, its all personal preference at the end of the day.

Have a think what weights you need, only you can know what would be the best design.style for you, theres no right or wrong answer.

Ok to narrow it down... I want heavy weights with necks, not sure if I want detachable or not, so it's a choice between... Duo, Supreme or Optimo? I used amigo medium weights and they all fit by spotty horses fine. If anyone has feedback on those rugs it would be great to hear it? As you know they aren't cheap. I live a 1 miles from the cliffs so it gets rather rough in the winter!

We have 2 rambo supreme HW for our boys. Ron's is now 6 years old, an Toms is 3 i think. They are wonderful! And both boys are big, wb/draft types - broad in the chest and with a big bottom, so no skinny ninny's! We don't get rubbed shoulders, but we do ocassionally get a thinned mane from the neck cover (can't tell you why it's some years and not others though....)

they come up like new when cleaned and have not torn, or freyed at all!

The Rambo Supremes are probably my favorite turnout rug ever.
That said I haven't tried the optimo or duo because I've never felt the need to deviate from a Supreme!

I have the Supreme 450g HW which has fitted a variety of different horses well.
I've also got a really old puple wug (think 15 years old) that is now on it's last legs, that one fits the TB types better. I've got a newer MW Rambo Original - I find the neck on that a bit odd, a bit gappy even on the chunky one.
I also have a Bucus sunshower which is great, so if looking for standard neck I'd probably opt for Bucas in future.

Rambo is a very good make however some of their rugs can be expensive. If you are buying 6, I would go for Amigo which is a range of rugs by Horsewear who make rambo rugs. These rugs can be cheaper and I find them fantastic. I use them on my pony who has a non-greasy coat and gets cold easily in winter when clipped.

In my experience both the supreme & the duo fit chunkier types better than very fine types - my cob x has both of these & they fit her great. My 7/8ths tb doesn't have either as they aren't a good fit on her at all. She wore a mw supreme 2 winters ago & it hung off her, gaped around the neck & was too deep so in the end I gave up & bought her an original which suits her shape much better.

I've had 2 friends buy the optimo last winter & both return them due to poor manufacture - the supplier said they had plenty returned last winter for the same reason. The friend with the finer horse had to go down a size in the optimo because she felt it was generally too big all over.

At the end of the day it's what fits your horses best and what suits your budget. Good luck!

I agree with IHW, I think the Supreme is the best rug on the market. :) I'll definitely be getting some more for our new horse.

Thank you that's a great help, mine are all Appaloosa's so fill rugs well. Iv just got to the point I'm spending on average £100 per horse for new winter rugs each couple of years, and iv been recommended and know from a few Rambo turn outs that they last longer and also dry out pretty quickly. Also my lady who repairs my rugs said generally rambos come back year after year to be washed and are fine to carry on again and again!

Like I say, my wug is 15 years old now, it's never been reproofed and is still fully waterproof.
My Supreme is about 6 years old and never been reproofed.

You get what you pay for IMO

Had Duos for 3 years. Would now never buy anything else.

Someone at the yard bought an Optimo earlier this year. They come up a size too big and I have to say I just don't like it as much as the Duo.

I have a Rambo Duo and its now going into its 6th Winter this year. Still looks as good as new, washes and re-proofs every year and is still as good as when I bought it. My other horse has the brown/cream one and it has the newer modifications. Its just as good as the navy one and the rugs fit both horses beautifully.

I have a Rambo duo which I bought off eBay and it's a brilliant rug, love how the liners can be added and it's never slipped, would definitely have another although I have a couple of rhinos too which are ok but seem a bit narrower on the chest compared to the rambo

The horseware warehouse is in Northern Ireland, if you look up Horseware on facebook the number comes up on their page. Give them a ring and see if they have anything in your size as they send them out to you for you! I know plenty of people who got rugs for €20 down from €300

I'm glad that I read this thread (I do love rug threads anyway) as I have just bought a Supreme for my TB. I have an old Duo for a different horse and really rate it, so when I was looking through the bargain bin at my local Wynnstay and found a 6ft3 supreme (50% off :D ) - I bought it.

Thank you to everyone who replied, I have had 4 Rambo Supreme's arrive on my door step this morning from a company called Wynnstay, if you are looking for Rambo rugs their prices couldn't be beaten £234 for a Surpeme and same for a Duo, everywhere else was £300+!!

I have 2 rambos... the old purple t/o wug (never been repaired and had it for years! fits my TB lovely) and a full neck stable which is also lasting very well, I would go for a rambo every time :)

I don't think they're as good as they used to be. I bought a Wug twelve years ago and it was fab, really hardwearing, washed well and never leaked despite never being re-proofed. I bought a Duo last year and was really disappointed, the outer fabric and the lining were thinner than on the old one and I can't see it lasting anywhere near as long. Luckily I bought it in a sale, if I'd paid full price, I would have sent it back. They are no longer worth their huge price tag IMO.
