Now my two youngsters have stopped growing out of rugs quite as quickly as they were, I was thinking of buying them each a good quality rug in the hopes it would last.
Are the Horseware Plus Heavyweight ones likely to last? Or are the Rambo Duos a better idea?
Or - any other suggestions?

FAL. last for ages (mine are about 13 years old and still going strong, horses live out in them 24/7 all winter), grab them quick though as i've heard on here that they've just been bought out...

Some rugs look like miniskirts on my Shire x Tb girl.

I 2nd FAL, both of mine are in them in the winter - they live in them 24/7 (in the stable too) they are great! got both of mine 2nd hand off EBay 3 years ago, they are still like new (after being washed!!)

Love the checked Rhino plus rug with separate neck. Would not buy another Fal (slumberdown?) turnout cheaper end of Fal market was only worn for one day slipped straps and was completely totalled although love my Fal Stable Rug.

I find Premier equine the best fit for my large horse. Most rugs look like mini skirts on him including, Fal, Rambo, shires and Weatherbeeters. Premier Equine are really deep and generous sizes.

I bought one of the Premier Equine Trios for my old girl, a month or two ago, and am very disappointed in the quality of the outer rug. She is very careful with her rugs, yet the stitching has gone, the lining is detaching.

I don't think that you can buy better than a Rambo to be honest. What size are you looking for?? I love the Duo and also the Supreme however I have just ordered the XL for my ID. If you want the cheapest stockists for this then PM me and I'll give you his details.

Hope your girls are ok.

Hi LP, my girls are all fine, thanks; hope you and yours are ok too.
They are both towards the larger end of the range. Not sure what the 'XL' you have ordered is?
Oh - and stockist details would be welcome, thanks.

I also agree LOVE Rambo rugs! I use to have a rug wrecker, she could go through other makes in hours. Her Rambo rugs have out lasted her by years.

I think they are fab!!!

Amigo rugs (in my experience anyway) are robust, & fit the larger horse very well.
The Fal Goliath rugs are designed for larger horse.

I have heard that from a few people about the trio i bought the HW turnout rug and so has my friend, her horse trashes rugs and his is still in tact. I wonder if the trio is a poorer quality for some reason.

I have a PE Winterbuster and it has lasted one winter unscathed. It is lovely and deep on my horse (comes down to his knees) and he is a good middleweight. Ineresting to hear that about the Trio, I was thinking about getting one. I have also noticed that PE have started selling polyester turn-outs, and IMO polyester turn-outs never last as long as nylon ones.

I had a PE Winterbuster too, and it seemed to be good quality - that's what made me buy a PE Trio, but the quality is much, much poorer, and I wouldn't buy another, nor recommend it.
It's a shame, because the rug shape and depth is good. All the stitching on it (and on the 100g underrug) is unravelling though.

I have a Bucus turnout I have just bought for my boy

its so nice, very good quality, gives him plenty of room and he is by no means small! Also it has a padded bit on the chest so it doesn't rub there.

FAL and Rambo all the way for me...... you get what you pay for - all of my rugs cost around £120 - £150 (the FALs were discounted) but I don't expect to have to buy any more for a looong time. I am constantly amazed that the horses stay dry and warm in all weathers and they can be left on overnight too, if necessary.

I had one of the first Rambo's many years ago and it was great. The second horse I used it for ripped off the X surcingles every years, but the rug still stayed in place. Don't know why I bothered sewing them back on! I sold it after 10 yrs+ as didn't fit my last horse. The outer never ripped despite the xs being ripped off.
Would definately buy another, but don't know much about the newer models!

the FAL Goliaths fit a big (wide!) horse imho. i've never had 1 rub, tear (other than to a very determined rug-ripper, who grabbed other horses' rugs at the back and trashed them), or anything else.
i won't buy a Bucas again, rubbish imho.
Rambos and Amigos are good, but i think the FALs are bigger and better.

I find FAL don't fit my boy well, although only 15hh he is broad chested and FAL rugs look all weird on him and bunch up.

Personally I think you can't beat RAMBO - I have a duo and it's the best investment I ever made xx

Rambo Duo's are dreadful IMO. My one fitted horrendously (on a normal TB type so hardly hard to fit!), leaked and the neck attachment tore several times in the few months I had it! Sold it and got a Weatherbeeta Tristar which is brilliant as are my other WB rugs (Orican, Arion etc.). The only Horsewear rug I like is a high neck Rhino used on my pony - it works as it should
wink.gif

Im a weatherbeeta fan, always have been.
They seem to fit Winston my big chested IDxTB really well and the KWPN, but the TB it kinda hangs on him although never rubs.

I use Rambos and Fals. I dont like the rhinos or amigos as they are not tough enough. My mare has a Viking detachable I think. It was about £200. It is brilliant. I found the fal didnt suit my narrow chap so got him a Rambo which is great. I think it is the 350g one and it keeps him warm and dry . My other boy has a m/w rambo and again it has been brilliant. Both live out 24/7 through the winter and neither are clipped. He is a rug trasher and it has lasted really well. But I had to go up a size in the rambo because he is quite broad. Rhinos tear easily in comparison.

I also go for the high neck in Rambos as I found the standard rugs dug in at the bottom of the neck/top of wither if they slipped back. But so do the Fals.

Well I had to have a smaller size FAL as the 7ft drowned my ID and longer than most but that is a stable rug and have had it for about 13 years and still going strong. Wish I could afford a turnout

May have a look although not clipping this year as he is semi retired now.
