You may have read that I’ve had a bit of a problem with leaking rugs recently :(. I’ll get them reproofed and see how they go, but am beginning to think for future use I might do better to save up for some better quality rugs that will be much longer lasting.

I know from what I’ve read on here that Rambo rugs seem to be well liked and sound like they last well, but I’m not sure my budget would quite stretch to them, so I was wondering what the Rhino rugs are like? Are they very inferior to Rambo or still a good buy?

Also how many turnout rugs do I really need , George only goes out during the day, is quite a warm horse and in the winter usually has a chaser clip. At the moment I have a:

no fill, no neck turnout for rainy summer days.
150g with neck for Spring / Autumn
220g with high neck for most of the winter
360g with neck for when it is really cold

Do I really need the 150g do you think? Or would it be ok to use a no fill for summer spring and Autumn if I had a neck for it and then stick with a 220 and 360 for the winter?

Answers on a postcard please, rugging is such a mystery, if only the horses could tell us what they want :D!

Thanks :)

Rhino are brilliant rugs too, if I cannot get a Rambo I will buy the equivalent in the Rhino. I think the rugs that you have now are good weights, just means that if it is a little chilly on the autumn day he has extra protection, especially with his clip.

I however am a rug freak and I have at least 2 in every weight for each of my horses, plus extras lol

Rhinos are good rugs as well.
Rambo is made off better material than the rhino and comes with a 3 yr guarentee against faults/leaking etc through product fault were as rhino don't.
Iv got rambo and rhino and happy with both.

If you can stretch to the Rambo Duo, the new ones are fab by the way, then you have all the weight of rugs required in one. Fab quality, 3 yr guarantee and tough material. I have had mine now for 4 years and still like new, been washed and re-proofed each year. I look after a horse who has the Premier Equine Trio and have to say that compared to the Duo, isnt as good quality and is very heavy when wet and the velcro is losing its "stickiness".

I have a new Duo on order and they have brought out a new colour called pewter which looks stunning, just dont have it in 6'6" at the moment. The liners come in various weights which can be used under stable rugs too when its particuarly cold. Sorry but I am a staunch Rambo fan.

I have Rambo rugs which are over 12 years old, get washed every year and despite never being re-proofed are still waterproof, have no rips or tears in them and look like new after being washed. I have an original Rambo and a Wug as well as a Supreme (which my boy grew out of unfortunately). My lightweight and middleweight rugs are Rhino's which are about 8 years old now and for the first time this year have had to be reproofed, again, they come up like new after washing. When B grew out of the supreme my budget didn't stretch to a replacement so I bought a weatherbeeta Orican which is a good rug and is now in its 3rd winter but is starting to look quite tatty tbh, small holes in the lining where the fabric is going at the seams, velcro failing etc, it doesn't leak its just not wearing as well as the Rambo HW's. The only negative against the Rhino LW is due to the quality of the fabrics, both the outer and the lining, it is actually a very warm rug, I bought a Amigo 600D LW this summer for those cold wet, windy summer days and moved up to the Rhino in the early Autumn.

Ive now got Rambos, Rhinos and 2 Fals. I used to get cheaper ones but they kept getting trashed so I bit the bullet and Ive never looked back.
My horse is a warm horse too. I use a Rambo LW in spring, Rhino MW in Autumn and a HW Rambo Wug in winter. I dont have any stable rugs now, I use my T/O's so although expensive to buy, they are dual purpose.
The rhinos are great, just not as heavy duty material as the Rambos. I have a couple of spares but they are left overs from when I needed loads of rugs as they kept getting trashed.

I've had a Rhino and the material after 2 years just fell apart. Exactly the same happened to my friends. They were both lightweights so don't know if the sun effected them? Still shouldn't have happened.

Got a Rambo Duo now and it's just brilliant. Always dry in the morning, no matter how wet it was when I took it off (unlike any other make I've encountered!)
