Rambo wug - do they rub manes?

Trying to decide between a rambo wug medium or some other type, won't need anything too heavyweight, just enough to take the chill out of the air but wasn't sure if these would rub my horses long mane or whether I'd be better with a standard neck and the detachable neck cover for really wet or cold days.

Does the wug leave a big gap between neck and rug while the horse is grazing?
 
All rugs will rub the mane to one extent or another. Bossy Bibs do a mane saver - although I have to say I've found an old pair of tights more effective - and cheaper!
 
I find that the mane rubs when the horse is too hot.

Mine has a fly rug all summer - no rubs, but if he is overheated in winter he will rub whatever the rug. I do use a Rambo neck rug for outside when it rains, but leave a neck rug off for in the stable, and this seems to counter the problem.
 
I've found it depends on how high the wearer of said Wug holds his/her neck! I really like them as they never seem to pull tight across the shoulders/withers but they rub my 13.2's mane as he walks around with his head up in the air, but they don't rub my 15.2 because he holds his neck straight out, level with his back.
 
They didn't rub my grey arab's mane where as a full neck (both were Rhino rugs) did. I found that when the horse grazed the full neck was very, very tight over the rubbed area, when the horse grazed with the Wug on that area had no pessure on it. So my pet theory RE rugs and rubbed manes is that it's due to pressure.

I can imagine that a horse with a high neck carriage could get mane rub due to a Wug, but my grey is a gannet so she keeps her nose to the ground for 99% of the time she's awake. ;) :p
 
Hmmm... Last year we went with a premier equine which didn't rub the mane but did cause too much wither pressure so this is something I wanted to avoid, I suppose I'd rather have a thinner mane than a sore wither though.
Do the Rambo rugs with normal necks come up quite high? Can they cause wither pressure too?
 
I can only say that I've used Horseware (Amigo, Rhino & Rambo, but not the Mio) and Shires rugs (Typhoon & Stormbreaker) with normal necks on my old TB who had high withers and she never suffered from pressure sores. I also use Horseware rugs and the arabs and PBA's I've had and again, no pressure sores.

I did have a PE rug once and I hated it as it was not waterproof and was so, so heavy when wet. I've not had any other rug get so heavy after rain
 
Yes that might have been part of the problem, the PE being so heavy when it got wet that it caused problems.

Think I might have to have a trip to the saddlery tomorrow and have a look at a few options
 
My mare came out of winter with a ridiculously thick mane after the wug, none was 'wubbed' (sorry) out at all! And it did leave a relatively big gap when she put her head down but she was in the HW and was perfectly warm enough in it. :)
 
I used a PE rug last year, and did find that by spring he was sore/rubbed over his withers ... i`m thinking of trying the "Wug" too ... My concerns are that it comes in a no fill, or a 200g :/ ... he`s a hefty chap so doesn`t need a 200g fill, i`m only wanting to rug as he lives out 24/7 and is a mud magnet and I want to keep riding over winter, but I worry the lightweight 0 fill will make him feel cold (not being able to lift his own hair to keep warm) ? ?

No I've never found Rambo Originals to cause wither pressure sores or rubbing manes. Rambo Wugs ... yes! I must own about 30 Rambos and yes when the Wugs came out years ago I did fall for the spiel and bought a few; I can't stand them and am hoping they'll die a death soon. I tend to only use them if/when the Originals need mending and I can't leave the horse without a rug.
 
How did we get from rubbed manes to pressure sores? LOL!

To be honest, I've not found a neck cover or rug that hasn't rubbed Kal's mane . . . and we have a variety of rugs from cheap and cheerful to expensive name brands (he has 30 plus in total - more than half of those turnouts). The only answer I have found to keeping his mane rub free is to limit the amount of time I put a neck cover on - truly.

I have 2 Rambo Wugs which I have had for 7 years and they have been on Tb mares (4 Mares over the years) 24/7 for at least 6 months of the year (put on in November and one year late September and removed late April/early May depending on weather) and they have never rubbed manes or anywhere else. They are not removed daily either and never move on them, both Wugs are 6'6" and on one mare were a bit too long and hung over her tail and still no rub on mane or shoulders or anywhere. I love them and would buy nothing else if it wasn't for the price!!!!
