Random, but ... when to start looking for new yard?

I know this is (very) premature, but I'm planning to move to the other side of the country to live with my OH when I finish my post grad diploma, so probably round about May/June next year. How far in advance of that should I start looking for somewhere nearby to keep Dylan? He's been at the same yard since I bought him, so I have absolutely no experience of horsey house-moving!

I think I would start having a look around now and find out what the yards are like in the area. Look in tack shops etc for adverts - also ask around - if you see anyone riding for instance. At least you might be able to identify the yard that you would like to go to - they may also have a waiting list. It might be possible - if you find the right yard - and they have a space now - to put a holding deposit down. I think a bit of investigation well in advance, if you can, will make it less stressful in the long run!

You need to start looking now really and have somewhere in mind that you can visit before you move the horse. You need to visit at a quiet time, ie lunch time weekend, and a busy time, ie 5.30pm when the yard is at its busiest. You also need to think about hacking suitability if you like hacking, how far from your new house, farriers and local riding club facilities if you compete.

List all the things you love about your current yard and all the things you hate. Take into consideration all the things you like to do with your horse ie. is there good hacking, is there a good school, do they other liveries compete at the same level as you or are they happy hackers or County show standard. Visit loads of tack shops in the area and perhaps a few shows too just to ask advice and local knowledge.
