I was jumping in a lesson last Saturday and somehow managed to crash the outside of the bottom of my thumb down on my horse's neck. I ouched, went round to do the fence again - and did exactly the same thing!

I had to stop riding as it was already swelling and by Sunday, my whole hand looked like an inflated rubber glove, with bruising all the way up my wrist, on the back of my hand and on both thumb joints. That's now gone down but the inside of the thumb joint is still painful if I try to do some things; I can't lift anything big in that hand or lock my front door, etc.

I rode on the flat on Thursday and it was ok but ached afterwards then, as people at work nagged me, went to the walk-in centre yesterday. I've been X-rayed and it's not broken but it's still swollen on the joint and is now aching again! Has anyone else had anything like this - or am I the only numpty?!

Ps, the doctor told me to rest it. I said: "Does that include going to a show this evening?" She wasn't impressed :)

My sister was riding my old mare last year, she spooked quickly and my sister randomly punch her neck as she moved....he hand was really sore for about a week after.....she still can't believe she did it!:D

Years ago I was on a horse that was trying to buck me off, I put my hand on his neck to steady myself, and my hand got jolted a few times . Afterwards my hand and thumb was really painful and I couldn't move my thumb.
I went to the dr in the end and found I'd damaged a tendon. I couldn't believe I could get such a stupid injury from that, I had to wear a splint on my hand, which was really annoying.

Not good! How long did it take to heal?

I was walking down the street last week, stumbled slightly, and broke a bone in my foot! It's amazing what tiny things can lead to injuries!

Erm, well, i probably shouldn't admit this, but I wasn't terribly compliant with wearing the splint... it looked stupid and got in the way when I was working or riding, so I only wore it at night, so it did take a couple of months before it felt better, If I'd done what I was supposed to, I think it would've been quicker.

I know what you mean; the doc said she was going to Elastoplast me up with my thumb pointing upwards but I talked her out of it :)

I tore a ligament in my right hand in my sleep (according to my sister I was having a night terror again, and punched the wall as you do!). I didn't realise for a couple of days, just thought it was really sore and swollen. I went to the docs and got referred to hospital, where I was made to wear a splint. I was actually very good and wore it the whole time, whilst running up the yard instead of driving, whilst riding 1 handed (patient pony that let me hop on from a mounting block the wrong side and I'd taught to neck rein for fun!), wrote with my left hand instead (it was REALLY REALLY messy) and it was all healed and ok in about 4 weeks. Splints are a pain, but you get used to them pretty quick. Wear gloves over the top at the yard though as otherwise they get really grotty really quickly. I got some cheap fingerless ones that go up to your elbow from Claire's. Hope you're all fixed soon!

Oh no! Nightmare :( is that six weeks in plaster?

Didn't even need a cast - just a bit of strapping, thankfully!

And, er, I had a cross-country lesson three days afterwards... (I just didn't tell my instructor, because she probably would have made me cancel. *g*)

Glad it's not too bad - and that you didn't need the cast. Something tells me you might not have got away with that in your lesson!

Ow, you must have hit it so hard! Thank you and I don't think I've actually torn anything so hopefully won't need a splint but maybe if I do ride one-handed, it'll actually be a good thing; I know my right hand can do too much and it's that one that's hurt :)

My horse prop-stopped whilst Cantering on a hack. I jammed my thumb on his neck and dislocated it although it went straight back in. The bruising was amazing. Palm was black as was outside of my hand. Paramedic friend said he'd never seen anything like it. It hurt for months and I wasn't able to hold anything for ages. It still gets sore and that's 2 years ago!
