My mare is on regumate pretty much all year round because of some behaviour about to be described below. Recently had to take her off it for two weeks whilst she was ill, and she lost the plot and reverted to how she was pre-regumate. She isnt always very 'seasonal' ie not aggressive as such, no squirting etc when not on it but has some really weird behaviour - she neighs like ALL the time, for some imaginary horse, far away on the horizon, try and ride her and she neighs and neighs and neighs and refuses to turn away from the 'horse on the horizon' and stands up, broncs, anything to not move. In the field she hoons round neighing (despite being turned out with three other mares), she neighs in the box a LOT, and in hand she is a nightmare, grows to 100hh, throws her (ample) weight around, neighs (again), rears. Lungeing she neighs (yep more), completely ignores you and also runs directly at you at 100 mph with her ears pricked swerving at the last minute to avoid you. She is a big girl so not much fun.

Two days back on the regumate and back to normal, none of the above, kind, calm, patient, biddable mare.

I have had her hormone levels checked and there are no signs of problems with her ovaries (although they are very large on internal exam) but no signs of tumours etc and they think she just has 'large ones'!!

I worry about her being on the regumate long term (she is currently on it March to November minimum) but can't manage without it. Does anyone have a mare like this? Any ideas if there could be something up (despite blood tests being ok)?? Any thoughts on long term regumate use??

I am baffled!!? And mildly concerned. thanks so much.

I have been through all of this with my mare - your story sounded very familiar. I eventually sent her to Bristol vet school, where they removed her ovaries (they do an all in package for £750) and she is completely different (the operation was six weeks ago). Unless you want to breed, its well worth considering.

If a mare is on Regumate - and comes off it - she will come into season within a couple of days. At this time of year - and/or when coming off Regumate - seasons are often 'stronger' and more noticeable (I use it with shy breeders who don't show to the stallion enough to get him interested - 8 days on Regumate - 2 days later they are begging!)

It might be worth trying her with a marble - when it works, it works well and it's probably cheaper than long-term Regumate.
