I'm kind of doing my own bit of research and thought that this would be a great place to get lots of people to answer.

It's all about mudfever.......................

.........what I want to know is those of you with horses that suffer from mudfever, how many are fed on alfalfa??

Told you it was random but I'd be grateful if you could let me know
 
None of mine have mud fever now, and none are fed alfalfa; but in the past I had one with raging mud fever and he was fed dengie hi-fi as part of his dinner. BUT I had another 4 at the time all on the hi-fi and none had mud fever. Do you really think theres a link?
 
My 18 yr old has never had mud fever, but the only time he was on alfalfa he had a weird split happen on the coronet band... hard to describle, it just seemed to split or open, then went scabby. We stopped the alfalfa as it was the only thing we had changed, and the 'split' just scabbed, fell off, and went back to normal. Never tried it again.
 
mine has had rageing mudfever, he had it before going on alfa a oil, when he went on to alfa a it got much worse, though i'm not sure if it's coincidence, the mud fever is now much better, and he has changed to spillers conditioning fiber.
 
My lad was much worse last year on a local brand garlic and herb chaff than he is on occassional small amounts of alfa A oil now. He was being fed it regularly up until a couple of weeks ago and only this week has he started to get tiny tiny signs of mud fever, which is down to us changing udder cream to a thinner one with no tea tree.
 
thanks for the replies, they make for interesting reading! Just trying to help a friend whose horse has had terrible mud fever for quite some time now despite many treatments and vets visits.

i'm trying to think outisde the box a bit and the two things i've got them to try seem to be working, fingers crossed.

I have two very prone to it, and two not very prone. All were fed Alfa A for two years, and have been on Hifi lite for a year. It has made no difference to how they get mud rash. Generally they are have good skin, and good condition. They just bog snorkell all day after lush grass, and get saturated in fields that carry the bug...
