Can a pessoa be used with a cavesson instead of being attached to the bit?
All my horses live out 24/7, this is my first winter. In November my 20 year old thoroughbred started wearing a medium weight (250g) rug. Just before christmas I changed it to a 360g rug as the icey weather came. The weather here at night is usually -6 at the worst. I feel the base of his ears and to me there is just a luke warm feeling. I'm not sure whether to add an old stable rug underneath. Do elderly horses feel the cold more (like humans do)? He is a nice weight and has access to hay/field shelter. I have a 'feeling' that I should, but that could just be because I'm feeling the cold.
Not sure about the Pessoa question, but can answer the other - my 21 y/o TB has definately started to feel the cold more the last couple of years, if you think he is cold it might be worth trying a rug underneath for a couple of days, you won't lose anything - or maybe try a fleece/cooler if you think he might get warm with a stable underneath.
As long as he has enough hay etc and isn't dropping weight I wouldn't be too concerned, maybe just have a little play with layers.
