I used to get this from vet for dogs tum, but she put me onto Zantac as cheaper alternative. That has now been banned. Anyone use anything similar, can the vet still prescribe it for the dog ?
I could just get Zantac over the counter but will have to make a vet visit for anything else.

I have loads of ranitidine, PL, I gave it to Muffin every time he travelled. If you PM me your address I will send it to you.

Thanks ycbm, do you know the dosage, it would be for a 12-13kg dog ? used to use 2/3rds of a zantac ?

ETA Im a bit off dogs today, one pooed on my newly planted bedding plants and the other pooed in the car and I couldnt pull over for ages ! !

These tablets are the same as Zantac ones. Off the top of my head 75mg but you can check the packet.

How old is your dog? Your vet may not be happy to prescribe Ranitidine for an older dog who may have reduced renal function.

ETA. Please note Ester's comment above about safety concerns.

Important

Ranitidine is currently unavailable. This is due to a possible risk with the ingredients.
Talk to your doctor if you have indigestion, or heartburn and acid reflux. There are similar medicines they can prescribe for you if you need treatment
If you have any concerns, speak to your pharmacist or doctor.

So its not just supermarkets.

Latest supply update here

There is a risk of contamination with acrylamide due to the manufacturing process. The risk to a horse or a dog or horse with a shorter lifespan than man is very, very small.

.

I wasn't posting to imply risk, just to confirm that apart from your supply you will not get it anywhere.

My vet advised not to give to a senior dog who MAY have had age related renal disease.

Unless you are qualified to do so I would suggest it is inadvisable to give advice regarding risk for someone else's pet.

I have not given any advice. PL asked for ranitidine. I have some due to having a horse shot this morning. I have offered it to her and it is up to her if she wants it.

Check my signature if you are in doubt about me offering advice.

Penny Less's vet had already prescribed ranitidine, she is unable to get it because of the current suspension of the drug due to traces of acrylamide due to either the manufacturing process or the testing process. The last time i researched, it was not clear which.

I have ranitidine, and if PL wants it, she is welcome to it.

She's an adult, she can make that choice for herself. I'm sure she's grateful for your advice.

OT but I’m sorry to hear about your horse ycbm.

Thank you all. My dog has prescribed in the quite recent past, I was just trying to avoid yet another expensive consultation as it is 6 months since he has been seen. YCBM has not recommended it she was just answering a query.

I can understand that you would be concerned about continuing to administer a medication to your dog that has been has been withdrawn due to safety concerns (there is concern that the medication may contain a cancer-causing chemical).

As your vet prescribed Ranitidine recently, but obviously before the drug was withdrawn, would it be worth ringing your vet and asking if he/she could recommend a safe alternative?
