I had this problem in the early days with my tb x. He would do it in hand too when I was turning him out in the mornings as well as we had to walk up the lane to his field.
Give him some time to get used to his new surroundings. Minstral was fine in company but it took loads of walks out in hand and patient stubbornness (on my part!).
We have got past it as he trusts me to look out for him now and loves hacking though unfamiliar territory or bends sin the road where he can't see too far ahead do worry him slightly but I can talk him through it now.
I used to despair but hang in there- it will get better!
