First of all I do think they do have a place in parks and open spaces but only if used correctly BUT why do idiots walk their dogs on the pavement, by the side of a busy road and said dog is is bouncing around at the full extension length!!! Something that I'm seeing more and more of and as a VN it's me and my colleagues that have to try and piece the dog back together!!!

Rant over :-)

I nearly ran over a JRT on a flexi a few months ago and the owner did not even notice.

I do use one on my adult dog, but only because he has distance control.

ETA: The funniest thing I ever saw was the pup carrying the collar part of B's flexi out of the kitbag, into the living room. Of course, when he let it go, it zipped back to the bag. Best game ever and kept him entertained for hours :p

:D:D Do you remember the Yorkie on the flexi in A Fish Called Wanda?? And the blooming great concrete block?? That had me in stitches .The perils of Flexi leads..I hate them, except perhaps in open fields with a poor recall dog.

That happened to one of our receptionists, amazingly dog was on one side of road and owner was on the other!!! It was old style ones that where rope and it was a little dog, she didn't realize until she'd gone over lead. She got out of car, re-united dog with owner and gave owner a right dressing down. The owner hadn't even noticed!

Also seen two dogs killed by flexi type leads, owners had let go of handle and it had rebounded hitting dog on back of the head and killing them instantly :-(

I'm usually one for "fine in the right hands and circumstances" but I managed to knock myself out with one of them a few weeks back :o So they are officially THE WORK OF THE DEVIL

Woke up to find the dog I was walking looking at me strangely before he p*ssed off into the woods.... Work was not pleasant with two black eyes

EK that still makes me smile.

I nearly ran over a Dach in our village the stupid woman had the dog the wrong side of the road as I came around the corner. She gave me a filthy look, hope she hasnt been out since the silage trailers have been up and down because if she has that little dog will really be a sausage dog.:(

We use them all the time - the very strong tape ones that is. BUT - only ever where there are no people / cars etc. Ie in fields and on forest tracks. I wouldn't even contemplate using one on a road?

One caused an accident in our local town a few years ago. Little old lady walking her dog, cyclist rode into the lead, he fell off and dog's owner got pulled over.

I have to use them, I have one senile and deaf and a bolter but both leads are firmly locked until we are in an open space.

The pavement walker with the dog on the end of the flexi drive me mad, why can't they understand what could happend when doggie decides to cross the road!

A friend of mine happened to be looking out of her window when she saw a woman walking her dog on an extending lead - dog ran into the road whilst lead was extended and was was hit by car and killed. Owner hysterical. They have their place, but not near roads!

I have read of several instances were dogs on flexis have been killed on the road, andI have also been "scooped up" several times by idiot people using them. I do use one for Evie in open country so she doesn't disappear hunting, but I wouldn't use it anywhere near roads, she goes back on to her ordinary leather lead as soon as we leave the fields.

There's a little old guy with a little old lab that I see on my way to work sometimes, who has his dog on a flexi. Every time I hold my breath and cover the brake until I've passed them:eek:

Only last week I was talking to a lorry driver who had run over a dog on one of these leads. He'd seen the owner and dog on the side of the road but didnt realise the dog was on a flexi lead. As he got level in the lorry the dog ran under the wheels.

I tend to use flexi leads on my two on day to day walks as one in particular can only be let off lead well away from roads in quite an enclosed space so it's nice for them to have a bit of extra freedom when we are in other areas however when I am next to a road or walking on a pavement with others they are always kept on short leads and are never allowed to walk in peoples way or have enough lead to get into the road. Recently my four year old cousin even managed to master walking my little dog on a flexi lead (carefully supervised of course) making sure she was not near the road so can't see why some people don't seem to be able to manage this and it seems like there have been some very sad accidents because of this.
