Rant - do people have no sense???

Reading the thread about the lady with the small dog and the person that took it upon herself to pick up said dog without permission (sorry I can't remember the OPs name - memory of a particularly thick goldfish) made me think of something really annoying that happened the other day and now I'm really mad about it again and need to vent

We had gone to Southwold and were sitting outside on the pier to have a cup of tea (my life is so rock and roll it hurts), Henry was tethered to the table but sitting behind my chair alternatively begging and people watching. I was keeping an eye on him but he was totally chilled so not worried about him.

Anyway, some woman wearing one of those huge gorilla coats marched up behind both me and Henry, and without making any kind of contact with me or any of my family engulfed Henry's whole head in a huge headlock/hug then marched off after sort of smirking at us - not a word said the whole time!

I mean, way to lose your face! Just because he's a spaniel doesn't mean he automatically appreciates that kind of thing from a total stranger!!!

I was FUMING but so shocked at this person's rudeness/idiocy that she had marched off before I could engage brain and 'explain' just why such a move on a strange dog of ANY breed is really really not a good idea... Luckily Henry just emerged looking a bit shell shocked, but how easily she could have been bitten - my boss has a rescued Springer who looks (almost

) as cute as Henry but who was abused and is nervous of new people - she would have lost her nose trying that on him!

Is it any wonder people get bitten doing things like that?

Sounds like Henry would have been justified in biting the silly cow! You don't often get that happening when you have GSDs Years ago my Dad used to have a JRT who was very snappy, particularly with children, if ever I had her out with one of the Shepherds it used to infuriate me that people would try and stroke her but back off the Shepherd. There was only one dog who would have bitten them and it wasn't the big one, but would they be told

I hate people approaching my dogs without my permission.

I took the Beastie to get clipped last week, now she does not like strangers after being attacked by a pup. One of the girls who worked there came out from behind the counter, walked up to Beastie (who I had on a lead) didn't say anything to me and proceeded to run her hands over Beasties body and down her legs (she was standing behind the dog so scared the crap outta her!) Sure fire way to get bitten. Well, she's never bitten or snapped but I wouldn't have blamed her, poor dog was terrified.

Can't say she'll be going back there, if I hadn't been so desperate to get her clipped I would have walked out straight away.

I think people assume gundogs will be ok with that kind of thing - Barney the lab used to get similar reactions. I remember once, when he was old and his eye/ears didn't work quite so well I was waiting outside a shop with him, and a father with a little girl walked by - suddenly the girl just grabbed Barney while her dad grinned

Of course Barney had not known it was coming and as the dad hadn't asked me I hadn't been able to prepare him - so he started and the girl leapt back and jumped into the road! Luckily it was a quiet road... then the dad glared at me! Barney loved children and would have been really gentle if he had expected it - the next day he was marching round the local carnival at work's stand with a t-shirt on adoring all the fuss, but she made him jump.

Just makes me so cross, it's so unfair on the dog, and next thing you know the kids are scared of dogs or the dog's branded as vicious.

I hate people and children coming up to dogs (especially mine!) and just jumping on him going AWWW PUPPY!!!!!!!!

Its like its a good job he is so well behaved or else you would be SOOOOO P**SED if he turned around and bit you or your child"!!!!

And as you say when people dont even acknowledge you!!!! its liek RETARDS GET A BRAIN!

My dog is not aggressive but is nervy we went for a drink at the local country pub last week in the sun, OH had gone in to collect some drinks and doggie is lay happily ( on her lead ) by my feet watching for his return.
Family with wild free roaming children arrive and mother asks if kids can stroke the dog, i say no she is a rescue dog and not used to children. Family sit down and children proceed to roam wild screaming and generally being a nightmare ( whole different arguement!) next minute smallest wild roaming child is crawling round under my table right next to dog and parents commenting how he is an animal lover and just wants to say hello.
I remove dog from situation before small roaming child climbs on her back and ask parents to keep there children away as i have told them the dog isnt used to children, there response if the dog is antisocial she shouldnt be in a public place.
Fuming was an understatement!

The annoying thing is, that if your dog had bitten her, and she pressed charges it would have been your fault!!!!

Our bull terrier didnt like strangers and we always kept her on a lead. People would approah to stroke, we would explain she doesnt like strangers so they must touch her, but they would still try anyway. Would have to literally run away from these people!!

Even though I grew up with dogs (bull terrriers), when I would go out and about riding my bike as a child I was always told not to touch dogs (or horses) without asking (and even better, just don't touch strangers dogs at all!!)

I understand how you guys feel and as you all say - if they got bitten they'd soon have a few choice words even though they're to blame!!

Sadly I NEVER have this problem - infact people cross the road to avoid my poor puppy

Finn loves attention and wouldn't hurt a fly - yet it seems 10stone Ridgeback is a a little intimidating for some people!! LOL

Although saying that at country fairs etc we get mobbed - but people do ask if they may pet/stroke him incase he's not friendly

They soon realise that the waggly bummed boy has no issues!!

Thankfully she tends to ignore strangers trying to get her attention. What annoys me also is if I'm running/cycling with her running alongside and people try and get her to stop cause they want to pet her.....

Umm, NO, my dog is trained to follow me, don't ask her to do otherwise it's not fair on her!

Same! We've got Irish Wolfhounds and people are always so scared of them. Actually they're the most harmless, dim animals in the world and want to be friends with absolutly everyone

My Ex's dad had a wolfhound - first time I went round he stuck his head EASILY into my car window!! ha - luckily I don't tend to be intimidated as everything is big to me (i'm 5ft! ha) he was a lovely boy!!

TBH Henry is about the same

but it would be nice to be asked first on the rare occasions when he is sitting still behaving himself!!!

He has just had a very fun walk (fun for HIM anyway) will be putting pics up shortly... just as soon as my nerves have recovered that is!!!

This happens to me and Stella roughly ten times a day. Everyone from homeless drunks, to toddlers, to old dears, to doormen, feel the need to say hi, most often without asking my permission first. Luckily Stella is more than used to attention and actually seeks it out. It used to bug me, but I suppose pushiness is all part of living in NYC.

I can't understand people being scared of RR's but we get the same with our RR Lola. People comment on how scary she is but she is the softest most loving girl ever.

I took my Chow to one of the local petshops when she was about 14wks old. We were smothered in people trying to stroke her, then one of the members of staff walked upto her, picked her up, and tried to walk off with her

It's amazing what some people think is acceptable...

I was brought up to ask before touching too. Very wise in my opinion, I taught my daughter that but she is a 'hugger' and forgets, one of these days she's going to get bitten and then it will be her own fault.

KJFIT, I'd be one of the people not exactly mugging you, but probably causing a pile up by to stand and oogle your lovely boy, wolfhounds, deerhounds, danes too. God I LOVE tall dogs! (Is it a small person thing? I have about an inch on you. Until my 13 year old daughter got taller than me I didn't FEEL short, now she taunts me with it every day

)

Finn must be coming up to 3 now isn't he? I remember because he is about the same age as Boston who is also all 'growed up' now too.

Yup he is 3 in August, doesn't time fly by - Boston has turned into a lovely dog

Finn now weighs 10 stone and stands 31" to his shoulder so has turned into a BBBIIIIGGG solid boy
