RANT - dog rescues, Im done!

To my mind I'd rather have a dog that's walked several times a day, a variety of short-lead obedient walks and training/fun time sessions on a long line, in ridiculously amazing countryside right on my doorstep, with the potential to be worked in the future, who comes everywhere with me and sees everything - but a rescue would have rehomed her to someone with a big garden regardless of their ability to exercise her outside of it. She'd have turned into one of those dogs that spends the entire day out in the the garden barking, or, being a sibe, digging her way out of it in boredom. :p

I've said it before and I'll say it again--my dogs are happy, healthy and lead fun lives. I think the stipulation of gardens for most rescue groups is absurd. I mean, it's not like the average British garden is massive anyway. That NY'ers are without gardens means we have no choice but to take our dogs on long walks, and very rarely do you see an obese dog here.

Gawd that last advert is a real head desk job. Got one baby and another on the way so why the **** did they take on 2 pups , particularly those crosses.

There are a few gorgeous male GSD's on this site waiting to be rehomed - Axel and Alex. And you would have no probs as the charity is run by vet students that understand that love is more important than paper criteria! http://www.bricksite.com/budadogs?id=155955 The dogs are in foster homes and are in the process of getting their rabies vacs sorted out so they can be exported. Some will be at different stages than others so you would prob have a little wait which may not be what you want.

I was turned down by 1 cat charity for not having a garden, then by another cat charity for having one!!!!!!!!! Eventually I bought two kittens which are the love of my life, but I still feel its sad that 2 rescue cats failed to have a fantastic home with me and probably ended up with a lot less caring, knowledgeable home that was perfect on paper.

Good luck on finding your GSD!

ETA!

So that leaves us with the unemployed - you may not be able to feed your dog, but since you are home all day - here's your rescue dog!!

GRRRR don't get me started - there is a family in our area who choose to be unemployed, have a dog and receive an extra £12 PER WEEK in benefits to pay for the dog food!!!!!!!!!!!RRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ETA!

So basically they'll only rehome to pensioners or housewives/husbands or unemployed people - all who are at home all day.

Doubt pensioners and housewives/Husbandswill have time/ability for more than two walks a day!

So that leaves us with the unemployed - you may not be able to feed your dog, but since you are home all day - here's your rescue dog!!

But god forbid you think to go out every day to cash your giro or have a social life for more than 4hrs a day!

ARGH WHY DO PEOPLE BOTHER?

You forgot Independently Wealthy - cos you know there's millions of those folk waiting on rescues!

Sorry you're having a tough time rescuing. :(

My YO was turned down by all the local rescues (incl the BlueX Karyn spoke about.... Must have been once the bloke left) because his 32 acre farm wasn't surrounded by 6ft fencing!!! Ridiculous!

Good luck. I hope they bother replying to your email.

well i wanted to adopt a small lurcher from a rescue and was turned down as i owned guinea pigs and they lived in the living room(securely in a cage on the table) they felt that it was too risky with the pigs in the house. they took no notice of the fact that i had managed to keep guinea pigs in the house safely for many years whilst owning a lurcher(who i had just lost through old age) it was their loss and i bought a lurcher pup from ad trader and then when i wanted another dog i did the same as couldnt face being turned down again. so they lost a good home for 2 dogs by being so picky.

as some know, when we lost our lad we found his brother in kennels a few miles away. I immediately phoned and my then OH was prepared to take the afternoon off work, there and then, to go see him. The manager said we couldn't have him as he 'nipped'.

I'm home ALL day, have a largeish safe secure garden, next to a park, and my children are used to dogs.
He was a 9 month old pup! It was no more than bad manners, which a few boundaries would have sorted out. I phoned again and said I wanted to come, with my children, and meet the dog. I WANTED him. They said no. Simply because I have children.

You know what? 4 months on that puppy is STILL in kennels.

Meanwhile I went and bought a puppy. I'd still have that little dog now, if they'd let me, he'd be wonderful company for ours, and he could attend dog school with her too. Ours went through the nipping stage, the kids knew to stay away from her until she'd stopped, and lo and behold once she clocked that no-one would give her any attention if she nipped, she stopped!

I can recommend police/army for rehoming a dog. My dad (reluctantly) took on a 3yo ESS ex bomb disposal trainee from the army. He was going to be PTS. He was insecure and confused, but the lovliest dog we have ever had.
And he was free. The police charge a little i think, but the dogs have basic training and manners, and they're really not fussy so long as you can feed and walk and love it.

I think it is madness when there is other dog company. It is different if they are left alone but for some reason dog company is not considered enough despite many dogs loving company of other dogs.

I looked into rehoming a mastiff which was in a charity rescue centre but was told they wanted a home where the dog was left for no more than 3 hours. I was working 2 1/2 days a week, could come home at lunch time on the days I worked plus could be home by 4. They had no idea that mastiffs sleep most of the time anyway LOL! PLus I had two mastiffs to keep the dog company, big mastiff proof garden plus experience of Mastiffs.
They said the dog had not been used to being in a house. Well this was a Mastiff! Mastiffs very quickly learn that sofas are good!

Hey ho! I am sure they had their reasons but I have a feeling the dog is no longer here.

I think if i was a dog i would prefer to be in a loving home with someone who worked and then took me for a lovely walk and fed and loved me lots, than in a kennel or dead.

If you are considering travelling to Wood Green Animal Shelter, why not also take a look at ARAS in Bedford. They specialise in GSD (but help other breeds as well). Both us and our neighbours have adopted from there.

I've also had a failed police GSD from WGAS. They were extremely honest on his assessment - he was on their "special needs section". They do insist on a home inspection, but have allowed a local postman to adopt an elderly JRT despite his hours. Happy chap and dog.

Vinny's owners have mailed me back and asked me a whole host of questions - what a good home he mst have!

I can't get Benson's application so i can fill it in on the computer - argh!! He looks perfect and I'd like to think our home will suit him well!

OH this post has made me cross.... I am looking into getting a dog, and had found one on MT that I really like but this has made me think that its going to be impossible now.... (even though dog would never be left for more than 4 hours, big secure garden etc etc) bums

We've just been through this! looking for a dog for my parents, it would live with them and be their dog - but we would be taking it out at weekends and looking after during holidays etc (kinda like doggy timeshare!)

I have Great Dane experience as do my parents, but Oh my word when they were finally 'approved' by a GD rescue they were offered a 8year old (elderly in Dane years) bitch which they had to collect from about 200miles AND pay £250 for the priveledge!

They ended up with a beautiful Greyhound (ex racer) the home checker brought the dog with him and left him with them after a satisfactory check, they were 'allowed' to choose the dog without being made to feel 'beggers shouldn't be choosers' and he seems to be fitting in wonderfully, they paid a rehoming fee of £100 which included all the equipment he needed such as a muzzle, leather lead and collar and a raincoat ..... would recommend adopting a greyhound to anyone (other than bunny breeders maybe!)

xx
