:mad:first time at burghley today , was shocked at the amount of dogs being dragged around , extremely busy around the shopping village first thing , dogs having a go at each other , one throwing up , tripping people up , been trod on and yelping ! , then dragged around the busy course in the heat, not one dog looked to be having a good time and was disgusted with how many young puppies where there , who looked shattered , twice there were calls on the tannoy for owner's to return to vehicles as dogs were left in them and were distressed ,
Get a grip folks , not one person i spoke to agreed dogs should be allowed at the event , on numerous occasions dogs launched themselves through the ropes barking at the horses , i have one incident on video .
I am not anti-dog as have 5 myself and would'nt dream of taking them to such an event , it verges on cruelty and stupidity , Rant over !

I posted recently in another thread about dogs at Burghley... Was saying that Greenwich was bliss because no dogs.. Really think 'the powers that do' should say no to dogs at big events.
Can't understand why people take them.

Agree, I have never seen a happy dog at such a big event :( I also commented on the other thread.

It is too stresful :(

Yes some will say ' my dog goes to all events and is happy' !!!

All I see is dragged along hounds looking rather uninterested and in fear of their feet!

We witnessed a JR getting attacked by another dog and a Border Terrier that got squashed in the Joules tent. Far too busy for dogs to be in the shopping area. Disgusting that puppies were being dragged around.

There were a lot more dogs than usual today, presumably because there were a lot more people!
I would particularly like to chin the owner of the dog whose shi*e I stepped in right next to a chair in the area in the horse village where the rider interviews were taking place. The dog must have literally taken a dump as the owner sat there, and then they walked off without cleaning it up. Nice, really nice :(

It infuriates me when people leave their dogs in their cars, the number of calls for people to come to their cars because of distressed dogs left in there was appalling. It was only the other day at some sort of event (may have been the Eisteddfod?) that a man was arrested for animal cruelty after 4 dogs were left in his car and all died. The forecast was for warm sunshine today so there is absolutely no excuse.

There was one dog I noticed that almost attacked every other dog in its sight (and I wouldn't go anywhere near it) as it was growling etc and I think it was uncastrated. If your dog is going to be like that at a public event then why on earth do you take it!?

The amount of small dogs I almost stood on in the crowds is ridiculous too! Although thats probably my own clumsiness..

Maybe there should be a donation on the gate of £5 or so for an animal charity for dog admission. I took one on Friday and I have to say I don't think he enjoyed it. As for dogs left in cars, the windows should be smashed and the people prosecuted. Why take a dog and leave it in the car!

I think yours are in the minority :( ax a dog trainer I would please ask every one' do not take your dogs to such a big event'!

It is not a good place for dogs to be :( just try and imagine walking around no bigger than another creatures legs and those creatures having no concern for you and not even seeing you as the legs are many!!!!

My local agricultural event had started letting dogs come, who h I do not agree with , however, they have got a dog crèche that people can take advantage of, not sure how that works with dogs that do not no each other!!!!

Disaster waiting to happen

I never take my dogs anywhere thats going to be busy because I know it will make me stressed and them stressed! and as for leaving dogs in the car, I think thats the worst thing anyone could do.

What struck me today was the number of people with three or four dogs and knitting with all the leads :(. TBH, I got totally sick of negotiating dogs on long leads - my dogs would have been thoroughly miserable being under so many people's feet.

Yep. My friends that I went with left their dog behind because they felt it would be too stressful for her. We did comment a few times that it was just too crowded, especially with the people who were going in tack stalls etc that you could barely move around in, with their dogs in tow.

I commented to my husband at Moreton show today that I dont know why people bring dogs to big events

I saw tiny puppies, dogs getting lost underfoot in busy areas, dogs snapping at each other and people letting their dog say 'hello' to cranky or over excited dogs leading to backlash and loss of temper on all sides

I went for a short day out and left my dog asleep on the cool kitchen floor at home - much less stressful

I must hold my hand up and say that I took my dogs to Burghley today...... they were not stressed and enjoyed all the fuss they received, however, I did take them out of the shopping villiage once it got really busy........

I didn't drag them round the course, I plotted up at a fence and they both laid down and chilled out next to me......

I did put them in the car for about an hour whilst I popped into the shopping villiage to grap a few bits later in the day....... I left my car unlocked, with all the windows half way down, the sun-roof open and a blanket over the rear window to give them shade, they also had a bowl of water with them...... they were not distressed in any way...... I love my dogs and I thought that leaving them in the car for a short period of time was better than dragging them round the crowed shopping village.

I took my dogs to Burghley today. They had a lovely 6mile walk round the course. I walk them on the quieter side of the track and we walk wide of where most people are walking. I would never dream of taking them through the trade stands -especially on xc saturday! And i wouldn't dream of leaving them in the car.
They had a great day - they love people and got lots of fuss and they didn't get in anyone's way.
Its not the dogs that need banning - its inconsiderate, irresponsible owners who should be.

I was at burghley today and didn't have a problem with dogs being there. In fact i was pleasantly surprised by how many well behaved dogs there were. In my opinion its much better for the dogs to be taken around the event than either being left alone at home for hours, left stuck in a hot car or dumped in the doggy creche.

I'm another who's taken a dog to a big event. Our guy makes himself ill in kennels and we were going for the full thing and staying in our lorry overnight, so he came too.

We do have some rules though. I'm always with my sister, so when shopping we go first thign or last thing at night when the stands are quiet, and even then one of us will pop in on our own whilst the other waits outside in a quiet area with our boy. We avoid crowded areas, carry water and a bowl for him and always take him for an off-lead run once all the action has finished. He's well trained and ignores the horses. If we're walking he stays beside us and if sitting he's asleep beside us or chewing on a chewbone that we take with us to keep him happy.

I wouldn't say it's his favourite place in the world, but he'd rather be there with us than starving himself and giving himself stress excema in a kennels (and yes, the kennel we use is a decent place. Our old dog loved it there and our neighbours current dogs are perfectly happy. Lui is just a nervous case).

Ironically, Lui was really bad with strangers until his first trip to the royal highland show. One day there and we saw a remarkable improvement in his confidence with strangers!

I'm sorry but you can't say it's ok for one type of owner to bring dogs and not others.

Either everyone brings dogs if they want or it should be banned.

What will it take?

I took my dogs to badminton once and never again would I do it - i love them, but they completely ruined my day! :D

I was at Burghley yesterday and cannot fathom why dogs were allowed in the shopping area - it was so busy and I almost fell over a large variety of dogs a number of times and heard a lot of yelping where paws had been trodden on.

I can see why you'd take a dog to watch XC and go on a lovely long wander round the course, but that's where they should stay.

That said, there would be no way of restricting it, as Burghley seemed to me, to be a large mish mash of 'attractions' with no logical route to create a good flow of pedestrian traffic, with no clearly defined areas ie shopping, food, dog area etc.
I also found the dog problem in the shopping areas was partially caused by the fact that a lot of the trade stands seemed crammed in to a small area, with walkway space being the casualty squeezed right down to hardly anything.

Or maybe it was just incredibly busy as no ones been able to go to anything else big this year practically.

I would like to see dogs banned I was there 2 days and saw quite a few loose dogs. It's an accident waiting to happen in an already dangerous sport :-(

Agree with banning dogs in the shopping village. It really was sad seeing the dogs getting knocked about.

My real regret though, is not noting the publicly announced number plates of the distressed dogs in cars. Would be happy to name and shame.

M_G, I suppose I am a good example though - friends and I had planned to go to badminton and then gatcombe, as we live in Gloucestershire, and would never normally even consider Burghley as its a bit of a pig of a drive over.

I wouldn't go again, unless I was assured by a local that it's not normal for it to be full of people dressed like music festival goers, and lots of unfriendly 'look down their nose' wannabe rahs.

I found it a very unfriendly place, on two or three occasions I spoke to a stranger (eg one lady hogging a mirror to look at herself in items she was trying on to compare, umming and ahhing - I, waiting to look in mirror myself, tell her the boots she has on look wonderful, to be met with a cold stare. In LR hospitality we had a family join us at our table as we only used half of it, trying to decide on a drink from menu - I smile and say 'oh, what I'm drinking is really tasty if you're not sure - we're all sat at the same table ffs! - and again given the daddy of all death stares before the woman sits down and proceeds to slag off the whole offering)

It surprised me how unfriendly a place it was, and all I can think is that it must have been down to the heat and crowdedness...someone please tell me that's the case, otherwise I'm staying in the lovely friendly west side of England for ever more :D

We has totally the opposite in LR hospitality. A nice family joined our table at breakfast, we were talking to people whilst queueing and some people at a neighbouring table also had a weimeraner so my girlfriend had to go and chat to them.

I took my woof to Carlton horse trials and she had a fabulous time :) She got a nice slow potter around the course (she's 14) and she's good with other dogs unless they get right up her bottom, then she will snap. Thankfully, no one did that. She's too old to chase the horses and doesn't like being far from me anyway, I could have had her off the lead and she would be fine (of course I wouldn't do that)

I would never consider taking her to something THAT big though :O I've seen loose dogs chasing horses plenty of times on the TV/youtube

Tescoexpress, did you pay for parking in a LR? We didn't find the LR car park I was hoping to park in, however we did just drive straight in, didn't pay for parking (nor have our tickets checked, so effectively got in for free ha we not pre-bought!)

Glad to hear you had a good time - think we were just unlucky in our company sadly! At least we had more fun than the miserable bag that was sat with us - she was determined not to enjoy her day it seems!
