RANT !!! DOGS AT BURGHLEY

I wonder if the people who had lost their terrier for over 3 hours (tannoy request to bring it to the dog creche if found) ever got reunited with it?
I don't have dogs anymore, but when I did I wouldn't have dreamed of taking them to XC day at Burghley. Saw a lot of very exhausted looking dogs being dragged around by oblivious owners. Thurs/Fri maybe as it's so much quieter. As it was I know I trod on at least 2 small dogs in the crush that was the shopping village. I make no apologies - it was packed, they couldn't be seen, they shouldn't have been there. At times there were places it was hard to make any way at all without having flipping leads tangling around your legs. The weather forecast was for warm spells, it had been mentioned all over the place that it would be heaving, there was a dog creche, there were quieter areas. No excuse at all for dogs to be in a crowded place. If you really must go to the Joules/Townfield stall/food village or other particularly popular place leave your dog somewhere else that is quieter instead of parking it with someone just outside in the thick of the crowd.
And if someone is just in front of where you stand/sit to watch a jump - don't ignore the fact that is licking the back of their neck/legs or sniffing their ears etc - it really is not polite. Happened to us a few times & only once did the owner make a half hearted attempt to stop it. The last one got a "do you mind stopping your dog doing that" & they were not very gracious about it.

I wouldn't go again, unless I was assured by a local that it's not normal for it to be full of people dressed like music festival goers, and lots of unfriendly 'look down their nose' wannabe rahs.

I couldn't get my head around the 'fashions' and dressed up hair yesterday either - I've got pairs of knickers larger than some of the shorts being worn  :D .

Burghley was always a favourite, but yesterday it seemed to be a date on the social calendar rather than some where to go to spectate. :( . We had a lovely time, but I think that was my last time actually going there. :(

Agree, far too many dogs, at one point over the tannoy there was an announcement that 2 puppies were lost, it was bedlum with the dogs, and I also was unfortunate enough not to see the dog mess on the floor by the chairs in the arena, totally disgusting !!!

Well said OP, I'm with you.

How many times have I heard others tell me that their dogs enjoy it, when the reality is that they don't recognise a miserable dog when they see it, or a dog which is stressed, for that matter? It also occurs to me that I wonder if they actually care!

There may be the odd terrier which enjoys itself, but that's only there for the fight, or to chase a horse or two, when it gets lose. ;)

I watched a woman with a three legged greyhound, a couple of years ago, literally dragging the poor creature around whilst she walked the whole course. I thought to say something, but then realised that she'd be unlikely to thank me. The poor dog was in a state of near exhaustion. Ignorance.

Were all dogs banned from these big events, then that would be a step in the right direction.

Alec.

Always take the dog to events on xc days, never take him into shopping areas, he goes for 4 hour walks regularly anyway so it's just a different walk for him round the xc. Love having him.

Never take him on dr or sj days though!

I do take my dogs to big events and would have taken them to Burghley. I carry water with me all day and poo bags. I accept it will mean no shopping but am happy with that. Mine are very used to it it then they come to events with me so are used to the format. We did manage to combine shopping and dogs on previous years when another friend bought her dog along. We took it in turns to dive into the village while the other one stayed with the dogs. Wonder if I find mine ok at things like that as we have a lot of dogs at the yard and mine pretty much go everywhere with me. In fact, it's because I have 3 staffords that I normally get held up by people wanting to cuddle them. Now THAT makes my dogs day!

Yes as usual there were lots of fed up and tired dogs, lots of dogs launching themselves at each other and plenty jumping about and being a nuisance. My particular favourite was trying to carry a heavy load up a hill in mud whilst dodging a small boy with a puppy on a long lead, neither of whom could walk in a straight line and neither of whom were remotely aware of the fact that they nearly tripped me up several times.

As for the friendliness thing, usually we find burghley more friendly than badminton. But they sold LOADS of extra tickets this year, and I guess lots of people went because they have missed their usual favourite event.

As for the tradestands being cramped that is because you pay by the meter for space. We have got 8 square meters and it cost £1500. So we have to pack the stock in to even have a hope of covering our costs.

Kat - I meant the walkways between stands being cramped - on more than one occasion I found myself unable to LEAVE a trade stand because it was too busy outside of it! Again though, I understand they are trying to make as much money as possible and I'm sure were not short of traders wanting a pitch!

Must give a shutout to the delicatessen husband and wife who were selling Lancashire Bomb cheese - fantastic people, super produce!

I'll regularly take my dog to the smaller ODEs but never ever to the big 4* types.

Owners that take their dogs into the trade/shopping area or leave in the car are just downright selfish - there should be blanket ban on dogs in particular areas IMO.

I don't go to Burghley or badminton and, if I did i wouldn't take dogs as it's a long long drive anyway so would make other arrangements for them. I did howeevr take my dog to Bramham this year as this is local to me so if needs be we can take the dogs home and come back within about 10 mins. I took mine as she is a resuce and new and does have issues on lead as is nervy so barks at people and dogs but she's coming on and I felt it would be a good experience for her.

I took her on the fri and sat and I do think she enjoyed it, we had a lovely walk around the XC course - she couldn't care less about galloping horses, she's not interested. We then watched a bit of showjumping and she was fab and laid down in the shade most of the time. We also did some of the dog agility! I think some events cater better for dogs than others to be honest but i wouldn't drag my dog round the shopping tents - I am not a shopper! I would NEVER leave my dog in a car at one of these events though. i don't get that at all!

I don't actually think dogs should be banned BUT I think people maybe should be fined for not picking up after their dogs in the public shopping/seating areas and fined more if they leave they dog in a car in hot weather.

I like seeing dogs at events although I definitely agree some people don't actually think about their dogs wellbeing andyou do get some less able (puppies/old dogs) being dragged round for what I consider is a very long period of time, too long for some dogs.

If dogs are left in cars the police should be called full stop & the window smashed in to get said dog out immediately-bet they wouldnt do it again.

I would consider taking my well behaved dog along but then my day would revolve around keeping him confortable-

À good walk first
Poo bags to ALWAYS clear up after him
NO EXTENSION LEADS (bane of my life!)
No dogs in busy/shopping areas
Always carry water.

Its basic compassion & common sense! If dog owners cant do this then they should be banned! This is totally unlike me as ive taken my boys to many events. Unfortunately the irresponsable few ruin it for the rest!

I take my dog to events but I believe there should be a one strike and your out policy. As soon as your dog is seen to misbehave you have to take it home, whether it be barking at horses going past or launching at other dogs.. Then people who take their more antisocial dogs would probably not risk it!!

I wouldn't take a little dog though. Just my personal opinion I always nearly tread on them. My dog is fairly large and I always walk him in the middle of myself and whoever else I go with. Therefore he is never in anybody else's way. He does enjoy himself on his days out. Always wagging his tail, meeting new people etc.

I love dogs (4 of our own) but there is no way i would take them to an event like that. Its not good for the dogs and although ours are used to horses and dont bark at them, they could get trodden on. Dogs left in cars is just crazy, i took one of ours out this morning and even with the windows open he was getting a bit warm when we were parked waiting for hubby, people dont seem to care about the dogs comfort at these events, and in my oppinion should be banned from them.

i agree, not fair on dogs and extremely annoying for spectators. i wasn't even there, i was just watching some rounds online and the constant yapping was driving me mad.

Why on earth would you take a dog and leave it in the car ffs

I took mine to Burghley a couple of years ago, he had a wale of a time, but then he is extremely well trained to walk an inch off my heel on and off the lead, well socialised with dogs/horses/children etc. I had so many compliments on his behaviour, several offers to buy and some asking if he was entire for stud duty!

If a shop was v crowded I didnt go in, the dog comes first obviously, I carried water for him all day just in case and poo bags.

I have never taken a young child let alone the dog;) couldn't stand the stress! was there on Thursday saw a poor dog in a quiet trade stand stood on by its own owner:rolleyes: (yes OK it is possible for your own dog to get under your feet at home, but I am feeling ill and grouchy and just illustrating a point:D)

You can't take to royal welsh , three counties or royal Windsor and people manage. Our neighbours will always let our dogs out because we do it for them. Leaving our dogs at home for Blenheim , they hate bring dragged

Before tarring all dog owners with the same, there are some of us who took their dogs yesterday and the dogs had a great day. And yes I CAN see if my dog is distressed and I DO care. Personally I think all push chairs should be banned from the event but that's a whole different thread....

Just watching it on the tv and I want to strangle that little white screaming thing you can hear on most of the course!!! The owner is standing right at the fence letting it go mental as horses pass wtf is wrong with folk.
