RANT - It's a dog, not a bomb

I can see why there is a problem when some dogs misbehave and the things described are quite unacceptable, but I have seen exactly the same behaviour and worse by children. I've seen kids urinate on the floor in supermarkets, pull down displays, break things and scream their heads off.

Not every animal or every child is going to be under perfect control all the time, we just have to live around each other.

When I moved to my current property about 18 years ago, a neighbour approached me wearing a sari whilst I was grazing a young pony on the grass verge, getting it used to traffic etc. She said 'oh no, I don't like big dogs' I had to explain it was a small pony...I have also had people come to view JRT pups, if I am expecting stangers the dogs are all in their kennels but jump up excitedly when visitors are there..the woman (it was the daughter that wanted a puppy) said words to the effect of 'Oh, I didn't know they jump, do they do that in the kitchen all over the work tops?' I tried to explain about training etc. and they were doing this because they were kennelled and excited but no sale, poor disappointed child, but we said afterwards it would not have been a nice home for the dog anyway. PEOPLE!

I dont see the issue, I dont know of anywhere which allows dogs into a tack shop. I used to work in one who did for a while but they weed on stock - gross! Sorry, but IMO why should dogs be allowed? Not everyone likes dogs, some people are genuinely scared of them. I get fed up in my job (which involves going to peoples houses a lot) when they just assume I'm ok with dogs leaping all over me getting me filthy. I dunno why it is but dog people seem to think EVERYONE is a fellow dog lover.

I never take my dogs into any shops, anyone elses houses or anywhere where they will cause a problem. And I'm sorry but I don't agree with dragging dogs around shows and events, poor buggers.

Personally I can't stand dogs.

I moved yards because one stupid owner thought it was acceptable to let her two collies chase the horses - and I mean CHASE, for hours on end, horses galloping about and falling over in their desperation to get away. If you turned your back on your stable for five mins you'd find it full of dog ****.

I've been chased by out of control dogs on bridlepaths, owners yelling indignantely 'why would you bring a bl00dy HORSE along here anyway??!!' (Its a BRIDLE PATH!!) One couple recognise me and my mare, they have a huge wolfhound thing that hates horses. They see me approaching - do they call it off or put it on a lead? Do they hell. They leave it running around my horse in circles, barking. She used to be fine with dogs but gets increasingly uptight now and sometimes kicks out.

I'm afraid in my experience its not the minority of dog owners who spoil it for the majority - its the majority who have out of control, badly behaved dogs and its pretty rare to meet anyone who can control their dog adequately. I'm all for them being banned from public places - it makes my blood boil when you see them get loose at an event like Badminton and set off after one of the horses.

My sister has a huge GSD, more than once he has pulled her over trying to get at another dog, he barks incessantely around other animals and mounts other dogs should he get close enough, while she stands and laughs. She has made no attempt to train or control him in any way - how can you get through to people who think behaviour like this is acceptable? Banning dogs is the only way IMO.

I like dogs but unfortunately I am very allergic to them. I am a horsey person, does this mean that dogs should be allowed into horsey shops because horsey people are outdoor people and like dogs?

If i come into contact with dog hair or if I am in the same room as them I come out in a rash and I cannot breathe. I have an inhaler to take for this reason, I only need to take it when I am in the presence of dogs.

When at outside events ie. shows I do not complain if someone brings a dog near to me, I move myself away from it (even if it means moving from the perfect seat in the grandstand!) it is not the dog or the owners fault that I am allergic.

However, if I were to pick up an item of clothing that a dog hair had landed on and perhaps try it on I would be struggling for breath. Likewise if I drive all the way to my closest tack shop and a dog is inside or has been recently I need to turn round and go home as I cant go in. This problem would be solved if the dogs were banned. How long do you go into the shop for? Can the dog not be left in the car for a short period of time?

I understand that people liek to take their dogs places and socialise them etc but can you not take them walks where other people walk their dogs and meet them there? In the park or somewhere?

Most people commenting on this have commented on behaviour of dogs and owners, for me it does not matter if the dog is well behaved or not I am still allergic and I am sure that there are many people who are also allergic and may even be worse than I am. I do not like bad/misbehaving/screaming children in shops but I understand that they do not cause a hazard to my health in the way that dogs do.

If you're going to ban dogs, I would also like a ban on cats from trespassing into my garden please? My dogs do not go into every garden in the road and urinate or deficate so why should cats be allowed to? *I know this is slightly off topic*

maybe they have had an incident?
or maybe its something to do with their insurance?

i dont have an issue with dogs, but i dont think id take mine shopping with me anyway!
and it is true not everyone likes them and some people may have had a nasty incident with one and be scared of them?

Totally off topic now - but I have heard that lion poo is really good for keeping cats off your garden. So much so that I am tempted to go get some from a zoo as I have terrible problems. What is it about cats and my veggie patch?

Anyone else heard this or got ideas?

Just been to Robinsons to spend my birthday vouchers.

Been going to Robinsons for years and have always taken my dog with me.
Even though he is enormous and looks like a wolf, lots of people stop and chat to him and have a giggle at his size. He is always well mannered and under control.

Upon arriving I was met with a sign stating No Dogs Allowed.

Apparrantly five weeks ago they decided dogs were a Health and Safety Risk?????

(Yet they are allowed in for fitting of dog coats etc).

Now how is a well mannered dog on a lead, in a store with lots of horse and dog people a risk???

Robinsons has now entered the Nanny State.

Blah.

I know it's frustrating and you obviously love your dog as much as I love mine, but to be fair to Robinsons, they are a shop and have a huge amount of expensive stock inside. I once saw a dog cock it's leg up inside Pets R Us, and it totally disgusted me. Imagine if I had been the next person to pick up what had just been urinated on. I think we need to respect robinsons descision.

:) x

Yup, I've heard this one - but it's a shame I can't nip out to the local zoo and just pick me up a bucket! LOL in the mean time, my three hooligan mutts have a job for life!

We all know how I feel about complete idiots who think dogs who are CLEARLY friendly and under control are dangerous.

I can see where they are coming from TBH- where I work has banned dogs too, as we are fed up with having to wipe up piss!! Unfortunatley, well mannered, well trained dogs are in the minority, and it's not nice for us, or other customers to have merchandise covered in pee from some dog cocking it's leg......TBH I would never take my dog shopping with me.

Which is why i've considered putting a sign up in my shop which reads "Your pets and children are welcome but must be on a leash!" ;)

I had a nice family in today, it was a young mother with a toddler in a pram, and granny and the dog must have belonged to granny. Anyway, I'm sitting in the reception area trying to talk to the granny and show her how to brush the pup and the kid reaches over to a display of balls and threw it across the room. Picked up another and threw that too. Picked up another and hit ME with it. It hardly hurt and the bairn was only just little, but I kept thinking the that dog was better behaved! LOL A few hours later, one of my regular clients was picking up her schnauzer and he ferreted all the balls out from their hiding spots under displays and stuff (what a good boy) so he got to take one home as a way of thank-you. Never say I don't appreciate my clients!

We allowed dogs in our pet shop and tack shop as it was attached to a vet surgery - and I didn't really mind having to mop up/pick up after dogs and the majority of the times the owners did it for me - it was when the dogs peed up the side of all the horse feed bags and I didn't get told by the clearly embarrassed owners that annoyed me!!!

Aww that's lovely! :) (not the kids throwing the balls, the dog getting to take a pressie home for finding all the hiding balls!)

I had my own saddlery, and I took my own two lurchers there with me. they would spend the day curled up on the sofas in the shop with customers sitting having coffee. I did not allow other dogs in, the reason was i did not want other people's dogs coming in a peeing on my carpets or my stock. I also did not want other dogs coming in to my dog's territory. Also from an insurance point of view my dogs would never bite anyone. but what would be the implications if a customers dog bit another customer while in the store. or if a customer walked through dog poo that had been left.
