Sorry, never had to have a rant, but very angry and very upset. I have just found out that 3 kids, primary school age have been spotted chasing my horses round their field. They have also been trying to get on my shetland pony.

In the field I have a 17hh IDx who is 5 years old and could be very dangerous to a child. I never let kids in the field with her, not because she is nasty, she just big, young and clumsy. The shetland pony, he is a rescue and came to us in a bit of state and was impossible to catch and very hard to handle when we got him a few months ago. He has already been through alot without this.

My other horse is 26. She has arthritis, gets laminitis and has no mane and very little tail so struggles with the flys (she is an appy). Not only have they chased her round the field, but they have taken off her fly veil and her muzzle. This is the second time the muzzle has been taken off, the last time some one took it!!

I have spoken to the police who are happy to go and see them if they know who they are or come out if they are spotted in the field to see if they can catch them. But no houses over look the field so hard to catch them. They even went in and chased 2 of them while I was out riding the other one.

Luckly my friend has kids at the local primary school, so she is going to do some digging around. Hopefully she can find out who they are and go and speak to their parents.

Rant over

Thanks

Go to the local school and stick a sign up on your gate, I think I'd actually hit someone if I caught them doing this!!!!

One of the kids from the primary school and a couple who keep horses in the village saw them in the field. I think as my car was down they thought they were with me, which is why they didn't chase them out. But really pleased they let me know. This must have been going on for some time because the othe rmuzzle was taken 2-3 months ago.

If we can't track down who it is, my friend is going to speak to the head and ask that she speaks to the whole school. So hopefully the head will take this seriously. My parents would send my into next week if I ever did something like that.

Gggrrrrrr! Kids just have no respect anymore, i'll change that to alot of kids have no respect anymore, as some people still bring their kids up properly!
I caught a bunch of teenagers trespassing, upsetting my yearlings the other week, they were yelling, clapping and screaming at them making them panic and run round the field flat out, I heard them from the house went down our drive and I saw one of the yearlings fall over and they started laughing and jeering, so I yelled at them and told them not to upset the horses and if I caught them again i'd call police, they back chatted me started yelling as they walked away, so I followed them up the road and asked to speak to one of their parents, they called someone and two yobs turned up in a car and screeched to a halt, anyway I stood my ground, i'm not going to be intimidated by yobs and I told the yobs i had their car number now and if I had trouble with the kids again i'd give the police their reg number as they had claimed to be the responsible adults of the kids, I was parked outside our friends house filling them in and turned out some of them lived opposite and the dad came out and accused me of stalking the kids up and down the road and that horses shouldn't be in the field if they are subceptable to passing traffic and people, I pointed out that I only drove up the road once and asked to speak to a parent or guardian, and the horses weren't subceptable, they ignore all the traffic and walkers, planes, dogs and are happy to be petted by other people living in the lane, he was a right a*se! He wasn't interested in what his kid was upto, he was more interested in a lone woman dared to follow 5 teenage kids up the road and ask to speak to a parent, as if I could do anything 1 against 5, then the 2 yobs turned up (with an extra girl in car) so it was 8 on 1, I really can't see his problem, if I had a kid and it was caught red handed trespassing and causing trouble, i'd want to know but if I catch them doing it again, I won't bother giving the parents a chance to sort them out, I will just send the police up there!

I bet they wouldn't be happy if one of the kids got hurt by one of the horses when they are traspassing and upsetting them, although it would be their own fault but bet they wouldn't see it that way!

HorseGroupie, I know what you mean about the parents, I'm not surprsed these kids turn out the way they do with parents like some of them have got. I'm glad I have already spoken to the police and they are more than happy to come out if the parents don't sort this out. I just hope they have sensible parents who'll sort them out.

Hairycob - thanks for that I'll try to make sure she speaks to the head in time to speak to them by Friday, not much time. If the head is no use I'll probably use rosiep's sugesstion of putting notices up at the gates and at the field, thanks rosiep

Hi there, we have similar problems, the primary school in our village actually borders our fields. The head has been excellent, if there are ever any problems we just phone her and she talks to the kids at assembly and writes to parents - if any are caught during school hours they are suitably punished.

Good luck - I know what a horrible situation it is.

Hi - kids are such brats sometimes, arent they? We had a similar problem, but my friend caught them at it and told them that one of the horses really didn't like children and would kick and bite if it saw them.....they haven't been back since and that was ages ago hehehe *evilchuckle*

This hapened to us with our ponies. What we done was to send a letter to the headmaster of all the schools in the area asking him/her to read it out at the weekly assembly. We stated that if we caught them we would try and get them prosecuted as far as possible within the law, we would give their names to the SSPCA and ILPH and should the ponies require vet attention we would recoup those loses from their parents and if we sould we would sue them for emotional trauma.

Nobody messes with my neddies

I sympathise. I drove up to the yard on a public track, past my mare who was sleeping with her head over the gate, when a little girl (age maybe 5/6) and her mum went by. To my shock, little girl punched my poor mare, and Mum was saying 'Hit the nasty horsey, that's right! Hit it again!'
So, it's definitely genetic in origin!

It's always worth telling them one of the horses is a vicious wild stallion....and that a child could be lying in the field for days with horrendous injuries and nobody would know...yes, I am evil

I'm glad they've never come back jumpthemoon

You have my full sympathy. I haven't been in this situation, thankfully, as my horses are well off the beaten track but if I ever caught anyone trying to hurt or upset a horse I would be incensed. I hope that you can stop the ignorant little brats.

I had a similar problem a while ago with kids going in the field. They werent doing anything nasty to them or chasing them round as in your case, and its nice they were taking an interest but my horse can become a loony in the field especially when food is around, and there are 3 huge highlands in the field along with a typical stroppy stubbon mare who has knocked me over on several occasions and id hate to think what they could all do to kids. as they seemed to be feeding them these strange red berries which was another concern for me.

So i put a sign up on the fence asking politely not to go in the field (it was tresspasing anyway) and not to feed the horses and everytime i put one up it was ripped down so this might not work for you.

Hope its all sorted out for you soon, and that the parents take an interest in their childrens actions.

That sounds awful.

Is it me or is there little respect for animals and property at the moment?

At my primary/middle school we used to have a pet horse and several donkeys, goats, rabbits and guinea pigs. Most of the children that went there approx 350 loved the animals and it was part of the school ethos to look after the animals.

I just can't understand anyone wanting to frighten one.

Evidently it gets worse!! There were 5 kids nto 3, 4 girls and 1 boy. We know who all the girls were, but not the boy. He didn't go in the field with them so were not too bothered about him. My freind has spoken to the Aunt of 2 of the girls who spoke to the mother. They both admitted what happened. She went through them like a tonne of brick and have also been grounded for a week. They were in floods of tears. Its so frustrating because these to are both nice girls they're never in trouble usually.

As for the other 2. 1's grandad lives in the same street and my friend so she is going to keep an eye out for the mother and have a go at her and explain how much damage they have done.

The worse one though is the girl who was definately riding Trigger the 37ins shetland. She is at seconday school and big for her age. Horrid kid, I don't let my friends skinny 7 year old on him. Her parent own one of the village shops so my friend will go un tomorrow and read them the riot act as well. Shes not the type to take any prisoners.

So hopefully this should all get sorted for the holidays and without involving the police. But I have to say for once I was very impressed with how seriously they took it and how quickly they were willing to come out if needed.

I'm in need of a stiff drink!!

I'd be tempted to put an advert in the village shop saying 'Beware - fat girl riding Shetland seen'
That should put the little porker off/at least give her a complex.
Yeah, I know, I'm evil.
