My horse is kept on a very horsey country lane with limited traffic. Decided to take my friend (on foot) for a little cheer up hack and give her a little ride on P when we got to a bridleway. P is very bombproof so didn't think anything of it when I saw a classic car approaching. Said car was a bit odd looking - maybe from the 20's or 30's era and was quite noisy so i prepared for a little spook as we went past them. However, they didn't stop despite two laybys being between me and them. I lept up onto the bank when I realised they weren't stopping but my normally placid boy started backing down the bank into their path and was snorting. They could see he was frightened but still went past going too fast. They nearly took his back legs out and as it is took a bit of his tail! I shouted but they carried on

Saw more of these vintage cars coming up ahead so I trotted quick smart to a layby when they all proceeded to come past too fast despite me using the slowing sign. One actually said 'sorry we don't have good brakes.. oh and there are 40 more coming!!!!!'. Why are they on the road without good breaks!!! Why also were thy going down a single track country lane nicknamed 'horsey lane' due to the high number of horses living there. There were no signs up warning us of this vintage rally... I am going to try and find out who ran it and send them a letter. Feeling really shaken up, I suffer from palpitations and they are going mad today now

Stupid stupid people, I was geared well up in hi viz btw.

No I can't find anything online. Horse is in Bishops Waltham area so I might phone the local council and see whether they know who it was.
 
What kind of excuse is that????? Their cars can't be very roadworthy if they can't break when they see a horse in the distance!! What do they intend to do if there is a pedestrian or any other kind of problem ahead, drive right through it?

I would seriously complain if you can find out who organised this whole mess.
 
Every year there is a classic car rally in my area too. There are never any posters or lefelets warning it's going to happen, or advising of the route.
So, unless we happen to hear the noise of them going off road up a local hill, we have no idea when it is.
Every year they must meet loads of riders as it's a very rider populated area, which must annoy them too, as they hate slowing down, so you think they would make more of an effort to publisise it.
No-one I know will ride out once we realise it's on.
 
Oh dear! There's one near us every year (possibly the same one as apes_mum, although we're a way away) and we've had them coming past us on narrow lanes. I must admit that the majority have been very good however. Mazzie was a bit bemused when they all came past us, as she'd not been in the country very long! I must say though, that what happened to you was completely unexcusable, and you should contact the council or the police, there could have been a serious accident and I agree with others that if their brakes aren't good enough they shouldn't be on the road!
 
I would go to your local police station and report the incident. Make sure you get an incident number from them as it means it is logged in to the system. Also get to know your local rural community Police Officer.

If drivers of motorised vehicles drive badly always try to get their registration number or part of it and a description of the car and driver - I know it is difficult but if you can then it is far easier to identify the offending motorist/vehicle.

When going out always ensure that both you and your horse wear hi.viz. I strongly recomment long sleeved H-Viz jackets as it makes it far easier for other road users to see your hand signals.

Also take the BHS 'Road Safety Course and Test' as this will provide you with a number of usefull tools and skills for riding on the roads.

A few years ago some cyclists on a road race caused a horse rider to have a serious accident because they refused to stop. The club was taken to court and told that in future all road race cyclists must be escorted and stoped if asked to do so by horse riders.

I agree and I would actually complain to the police and let them find out who it is. They probably won't do anything but might make you feel better :-)

Absolute gits though, i would of yelled my head off at them. Bless Paddy for being so great!!!! what a little star.

It was hard to get the registration on such an unusual car - I couldn't see where the plate was. I was kitted out head to toe in hi viz and have taken my BHS Riding and Road Safety test.

I will perhaps speak to the local police as they refused to stop and particuarly re braking issue!
