sorry bit of a rant here - was having fabby day watching XC on saturday when at the coffin type fence with 3 elements WFP had just landed and taken a stride on Navigator when some bloody wienmearer dog ran straight in front of him. Very lucky that the horse didn't stand or kick him and also that WFP stayed put after Navigator done a little shimmy!!!!
The owner sat on her backside and didn't move!!!!!!!!!!! Can you believe it!!!
If I wasn WFP I would not be very impressed.
Needless to say several members of the public had words with her.

But in hindsight it flagged to me the attitude of some people - how many times have you seen on TV a loose dog chasing a horse XC etc. Do these people leave their horses gates open with the same carelessness???
I know this is very small minority of people however the amount of dog poo also seen at Bramham not picked up also infuriated me....

sorry rant over most dog owners are very responsible but this woman not moving got my blood boiling!

I think there are a few ignorant idiots to be honest. We are fortunate we live nearby to the event so can pop our dogs up (they need to get walked somehow) and take them back again. There are far too many though who take their dogs all day and dogs get bored sitting in one place! Yes, it may be fab for a spectator to sit by a fence for ages but a dog is just going to get bored and frustrated hence why it probably ran off. I would be mortified if either of my dogs did that (but fortunately they have manners and are well behaved!)

I personally didn't see a lot of poo but I did wonder why so many people took their dogs yesterday - it was far too hot for a dog to be there all day without shade.

IMO most Dog Owners are far from responsible....

Well if you're gonna start this one, I'll add to it!

Every day I ride past 2 gates at the bottom of our drive way and every day the neighbours dog is out and runs up to one gate when you get to it, then the other as you get to it, now one gate is on our driveway, the other is on the road and even though the horses know the dog is going to bark as soon as they get next to the gate, they still jump, sometimes vearing into the road. I am constantly swearing at this dog and the owner is such a b1tch, she just stands there and lets it do it.

It really pi55es me off but she is a psycho so I won't go up to her and say anything

I always have to make sure that I time it just right when we go past the gate so there isn't a car coming, otherwise it could be quite horrendous. The other thing I worry about is my horse pulling off his shoes as he jumps sideways, this has happened before but not there. If it does happen, i'll be sending her the bill for the farrier

As the person who started the Badminton 'loose dogs' thread I'm with you. My opinion still hasn't changed. I started that thread becase I sat watching with my jaw on the floor as time after time dogs got away from their owners and chased horses or barked and went for them as they went past!
I couldn't believe that the owners would take dogs that bark and chase horse to an event like Badminton. Fair enough if you have a quiet dog that doesn't bark/chase/try to savage horses, but why oh why take one that does? The owners should have been dressed down and kicked out.

there should be a huge fine (and i mean HUGE) levied on anyone who lets a dog loose while there are horses running on a xc course. it could cause a terrible fall very easily... it's amazing it hasn't already. i think £1000 to MDIRF from every stray dog's owners would be a very effective and rapid deterrent. no excuses, it is appalling laxity and very dangerous.

well said Kerrilli

AS far as i was aware there was actually supposed to be a £20 fine for any loose dog at Bramham. Never seems to be put into force though. When I was helping out a mate and taxi-ing the competitiors one v hot year at Bramham there was a sign noting the fine that would apply. However, this was in the in the competitors yard and horsebox area but maybe it should apply to the whole event. There was actually a 'lost' dog that was in the secretarys tent for ages on saturday - how does someone not notice their dog's buggered off?

My dogs have no interest in horses whatsoever but some do seem to go manic. I def wouldn't take mine if they were like that, would do my head in!! Is it a problem that seems to be on the increase? Funny (not in a ha ha way) the woman mentioned didn't bother to even get up to retrieve her dog - can you imagine the uproar had her dog been killed had the horse landed on/kicked it. That would have been interesting!

i feel it's getting to the point were enough is enough and dogs should be banned from these events.....surely the organisers should put in kenneling facilities so dogs are kept away from the course and out of hot cars???

I expect she was absolutely cringing with embarrassment as it was! Or perhaps not, who knows.
Personally, I don't see why people feel the need to take their dog to shows...
