Rant; someone else hitting MY horse?!

I am ex Hartpury and wouldn't consider any of my horses there as I know that some of the students don't treat the horses in the way you would treat them yourself. If it was my horse, I would go straight to Jeremy Micheals to complain verbally & in writing that this has happened, CC the yard manager and make sure this girl is not allowed anywhere near your horse again.

I would be fuming too. If you had said it was in self defence when the horse was turned out and he'd lunged at her that would be one thing - but to hit a stabled horse around the head with a head collar is shocking. If you think or know a horse bites when you are near - don't go near! She has no right to hit your horse in this situation whatsoever. - he was causing no harm or threat. This coupled with the fact you have seen her hit another horse with a metal shovel if I were you I would do my upper most to get her chucked off the yard - that is disgusting and she shouldn't be at the college or yard

I agree. It was her own horse she hit with a shovel which is what I don't understand? I think I have done what needs to be done at this point and will have to wait until I am back at the yard to see the concequences, hopefully.

Panda2007; I don't have a problem with Hartpury, I love it and have never seen anyone on either of the Academy yards do anything bad to their horse, apart from this girl.
I wouldn't have him on the main yard, I know there is always some controversy on how students keep the horses. The girl is not part of the Academy (she didnt pass the try-outs) so I don't think Jeremy could do much

Thanks everyone

I would be absolutely FURIOUS in your position.

The horse in the stable next to me is a biter (bi his owner this morning). I have fed and hayed him a few times in the mornings on his owners' requests when they've not been able to get to the yard and they have said there is a whip just outside his manger and to use it if he does go for me, but that said, I still probably wouldn't hit him. I have told him off verbally, but unless I was in serious danger I couldn't hit someone else's horse, it's quite shocking IMO. She should be kicked off the yard.

Well, I have passed through Hartpury occasionally and can make a few suggestions;
1. Move the horse to the end of one of the livery barns, away from the girl you argue with.
2. Consider the balanced perspective - if this girl made the same accusation against you...what steps would you want the staff to take? Would you want them to immediately exclude you, on the word of one other student? Would you want them to discuss you with this girl? I am sure you can see that for action to be taken, they must have evidence. And action taken will be confidential (Data Protection Act) so will NOT be discussed with you, or anyone else as it is not considered to be your business.
And I wouldn't be listening to the posts regarding Hartpury structure for a complaint... I suspect they're somewhat out of date

My horse was at hartpury in my first year and again in my third year, we were on g barn so pretty quite. However if anyone had done that to their own horse nevermind someone elses the barn supervisor would have gone ape!
My horse was in the of the barn and would pull faces at peoples horses, i told them to wave a hand in his face and he would go away, if someone had walloped him id of locked them in my tack locker for the rest of the term!
Im surprised that Paul (if hes still there) hasnt done anything, but in the past i know that the academy students got given a lot of leeway (sp?) because of who they were, but only with minor things. Shouldnt be the case here though!
If nothing happens about it and your still not happy take it to your tutor, they should be able to tell you what to do about it!

Lucyann89, you have given enough detail in your post to clearly identify the person you are talking about, and by association, yourself. You might wish to consider the forum warning about defamation in this context. You may also wish to consider how your post reflects on Hartpury and your future there.

Anybody can read these posts, and I think sometimes that is forgotten.

My horse is very much like yours in the stable. In all the yrs he has been at current livery yard (almost 3 yrs) he has NEVER bitten or kicked anyone.....But he does snap his teeth, ears back and lurch over the door, I gues she looks pretty scary, but to me he isn't, I've had him 7 yrs now. If he ever bit me he would get a real reprimand. Similarly if he ever kicked me. He knows this from previous experience with me and he never tries anything.

Unless my horse actually bit or kicked someone I would not expect them to interfere in any way with my horse. I would be very angry.

Sounds like this person (more money than sense) is exactly like someone we have on our yard.

I've spent some time at Hartpury, and spoken to students who said they would never keep their horses there. The reasons were about lack of turnout, and the way other people treated the horses. Bearing in mind that you say Eric is reacting to the fact that he hates the regime of being kept in 24/7 - does he have to live there at all?

Shilasdair; Thanks for the help. I don't argue with her I had never said a bad word to her until asking her about hitting my horse. I think she should have a warning, about her horse's poor state aswell, as I would not like to be totally to blame for her having to leave the yard.

the watcher; I am well aware there will be people who know who I am, I think my user name gives that away and the pictures of my horse in the signature..?! I am not trying to hide my identity? And as for the girl, everyone on my yard knows about it so whilst I am not naming her for people who dont know hartpury, those who do know who I am on about no doubt but I really am not trying to hide her identity either. As I have not named anyone or any horse aside from my own, I have not done anything wrong what so ever so am confident that this simple post about a wrong-doing will not affect my future at Hartpury.

Tinypony; yes the only bad thing is turn out is restricted through the winter. He doesn't have to live there no, but it's less hassle for me to have to drive to a local livery. I know he prefers the outdoors but being in his stable is not bad for him, and he has toys and constant feed to keep him occupied

thanks

I'd say it seems pretty bad for him actually - apart from the fact he seems to be getting beaten around the head for showing his displeasure at being in, you did say in your original post that he hated being stabled.

It may be 'less hastle' for you to keep him at college. But your horse sounds miserable...............

I keep my three out...but horses are fine stabled if they get enough exercise during the day. Hartpury simply can't do all year round turnout for the 210 horses that it can accommodate because it is a high rainfall area, and the soil is clay, so doesn't do well. Efforts are usually made to do some sacrificial turnout...although that is also weather and farm dependent. It does however, have endless indoor schools, outdoor schools, and off road hacking, so there is no excuse for a horse standing in its stable 24 hours a day (not that I'm suggesting that the horse in this thread does at all

That is fine for many horses, but not all. I'm not having a go about Eric, so please don't take this badly, but from what you said in your first post he appears to be one of those horses that really doesn't suit long periods of being stabled. So he's started to show this, and then this person has taken it upon themselves to react (totally out of order I agree!). Some horses need turnout and socialisation, excercise and toys are not a substitute.

i would be livid. someone needs to tell this girl that she wouldn't be the first one to hit a horse round the head with a leadrope, bridle, etc, and damage its eye, leading eventually to blindness.
if it had happened to my horse, i would go to whoever the big cheese is and ask them to officially issue a general warning to people about not hitting horses around the head, (especially yours!)
tbh she sounds frightened. if you are confident around horses, you don't react to a minor threat by whacking them around the head. the stupid cow.

Eric's at Hartpury with me and has no option but to stay in a stable pretty much 24/7, whereas at home, we have stables but he just loves it outside and hates the stable! He was pretty badly abused as a racer in his stable so I understand why he gets a bit grumpy. He pulls faces and acts 'scary' but he is really a wimp, he doesn't bite or kick and his grumpy strops are generally when he knows it feed time.

I don't agree with what this girl did, but I suggest that she also may have thought the horse "deserved it". When horses start looking threatening over the door a lot of words like aggressive, dominant and nasty start to be bandied about.
We've got 2 ex-racers on our yard, one is just a bit grumpy in the stable, the other is positively unsafe, but we understand they have reasons and work around it. The unsafe one is on box rest at the moment, with a pen put up outside his stable - electric tape to the outside rail. This keeps him content and easier to work with.
