Need a rant! scoobies not been coping well with separation since my malta went and not eating much, i cant take her everywhere its just not possible im a single mum of 3. i was mugged tuesday and it hit home how much malta kept people away.

so i decided to get another dog/puppy rescues wont let me have anything bigger than a staff as i have a 2yr old and 3 yrs old so i started looking at puppies. I must say (been 9 years since i bought puppy as scoobie was rescued off owners) why are horses going cheap but puppies are so damn expensive, i seen a colliexlurcher/staff for £250! i dont mind paying £300ish for a good breed puppy if its had all checks/jabs comes from a good breeder but why are people breeding anything these days?? i love staffs but i refuse to buy one as there are many in rescues, i want a large breed dog like a mastiff x or rottwiler(sp) but would you pay £450 for a rott x lab?

Go to the rescue Large Breed Dog Rescue.

They charge a £200 donation and always have mastiffs and mastiff x available or incoming.

You should be lucky you aren't into my breed as Bulldogs are in excess of £1500

Thats a real shame, have you tried the above rescue as I know they rehome with children. Some of the dogs won't be rehomed with children under 14 as they have no evidence the dog has socialised with children but would ensure the dog you got was suitable for tiny tots even if you had to wait.

They have a puppy Tubbs on there now and he would be socialised with your kids.

I hope it works out.

I have 2 girls from them and they are totally fabulous and I would trust them with anyone no matter how small.

The only thing I wouldn't trust them with is a sausage casserole :D

If I had two very small children I would not take a rescue dog into my house. You have absolutely no idea what has happened to that dog in the past, and the thought of leaving two small children with a dog I didn't know is very worrying. It doesn't matter what breed of dog, or what size. It is far too great a risk.

Reputable rescues will know which dogs are suitable and which aren't.

Most dogs find themselves in rescue through no fault of their own and you have to treat each dog placement individually.

IMO no dogs should be unattended with smallies even if its one you bought privately.

I wouldn't leave two small children unattended with ANY dog, even one I'd seen born.

Ditto, why would you leave a kid with any dog without supervision, that's just asking for trouble!

Hope you get sorted M, as mentioned some of the smaller private rescues are much more flexible and ALL the ones around me have lots of pups in at the moment :( but appreciate it may be a bit far for you to travel

Don't be put off trying breed rescues, Labrador Rescue let my sis in law adopt a dog when her baby was 6 months old!

I actually did not mind spending £650 on my dog. I think low prices can encourage some types of people to buy a dog on a whim, when realistically they don't have the time or the means to look after the dog properly (not saying that is you at all!). But that is a dog with all the checks from good dogs, not people breeding on a whim either!

There was a Rottie needing a home asap on a thread on here last night..... Is in a pound. I'll see if I can find it.

ETA http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=513154 may have already found a home, but have you tried ringing the pounds and seeing what they have?
