I got rid of my farrier as was messing me about and then didnt turn up. YO recommended a farrier he uses so had horse shod by them. I purposely booked for him to come today (for the second time) as I had the day off work. I like being there when the farrier comes and with it being only the second time he has shod my horse I wanted to chat with him about my horses feet and he has apprentices so might not be the same one as before.

I rung him first thing, no answer. Spoke to YO who had spoken to farrier who said he would be there after 1. I went down to the yard and waited .... and waited. 5:30 and no sign and no answer to mobile during that time. Had to leave in the end as had to go out. Called into yard on way home and spoke to YO. YO had spoke to farrier and arranged for him to come tomorrow at 3 instead.
I am so angry. Im back at work tomorrow so probably wont be there when he comes. I dont want him shoeing my horse for the second time with me not there. My horse is desperate for shoeing and he wont answer his phone. Have left a message for him to ring me asap but nothing yet.
I just want a reliable farrier. Is it too much for them to ring if he cant make it. I havent left any money for if he does come and the only thing I have done today is get sunburn

Am I being unreasonable?

I can only sympathise - once waited 3 1/4 hours for mine, no phone call, nothing. Then another time he didn't turn up at all. That was the last time we used him, mind! Scotsmare is right, there are more customers than they need - though that doesn't excuse the sloppy attitude of so many. Maybe someone on here can recommend you one?

TBH I heard a rumour that he is letting his apprentice borrow his equipment for 1 day a week so that he cant begin to go solo. If he does then I'll have his apprentice

If I knew this would happen I would have stuck with my old farrier, he was so knowledgable but I just got fed up of him not turning up.

I had a brilliant farrier but he was a totally unreliable b******d. He was once due to come for the day to shoe 8 horses on the yard, he had let us down twice and they were all desperate. None of us could get another day off work so we paid someone to be there for him. At 5.30pm he left a message on a friends phone to say he had got held up and didn't know when he could come so could we get someone else to shoe them! I would not mind but they were all easy horses to do, he had a good indoor concrete yard to work on and a constant supply of coffee and biscuits! You try finding another farrier at short notice to shoe 8! I am now very lucky, the new farrier is totally reliable, turns up on time and will always come in an emergency.

sympathise but if YO booked it and YO changed, it why would you assume farrier knew it was multiple owners, or that you wanted to be there, or that YO had not informed you of the change? would be more peeved at YO than poor farrier, tho I agree some can be a bit inconsistant, (mine's great if your lincs/notts border area)

My Farrier is pretty good he calls of he is going to be really late etc. When I was younger my farrier never turned up I used to sit and wait for him and he never arrived!! But always a few days after id go to yard and pony would be newly shod!! and i used to drop the money off for him......

I've just switched to a new farrier - they are pretty much the most expensive in the area but they turn up when they say they will and if they're going to be late they ring or text to let me know. Makes a huge change from missed appointments etc.

my farrier is fab. I have no complaints at all! I can understand everyones frustrations and concerns, but I thought I would compliment mine!

I have recently changed farrier as my last one just wouldn't come out. In fairness I was really out of his area, but I did pay extra. If he didn't want to continue shoeing my pony he only had to say so. He once left me for 12 WEEKS, my poor boy!!

I now have a super farrier who qualifies in July. He turns up on time, does a good job and is pleasant, as long as he gets his tea. LOL

Its a nightmare isn't it. We have a yard farrier who comes every Thursday. Yet even with this regular slot in his diary (usually to shoe at least 5 or 6 horses) he can turn up anywhere between 8:30 and 16:30. ANd then sometimes its him and sometimes its just his apprentice.

But then when you talk to the poor lads, they are working flat out all the time. They often finish ours at about 15:00, having already done a full days work, and are still going on to do another 8 - 12 horses before their day is done. Doesnt' help us but I don't get the impression then are sitting in the van drinking tea and taking naps while we are waiting!

I used to have this problem with my old farrier a few years ago, when I used to own my other 2, only he'd phone the evening before and say he was coming to do mine before he started for the day, could I meet him at the yard at 6.30am....then there'd be no sign of him.

I only used my new farrier twice for Henry before he was PTS, and he was an absolute angel. He'd phone when he'd finished his last appointment to tell me he was just finishing a cuppa then he'd be on his way, his ETA etc. He even phoned me the last time to tell me that he was sorting an extra horse who was having a problem with something and estimated to between 30 and 45 minutes late, was this going to be ok or did I need to be getting on? If so he could come the following day, either before I went to work or after I came home if I was working. He's lovely!

Well, i don't know whereabouts in Yorkshire you are or who you use (although i could guess and may be right but that would be unfair!) Our farrier is great and always turns up on time and will ring if he doesn't think he will be able to. He has also come out within an hour or so to re fit my horse's shoes, check for abscesses etc as I have a horse who suffers with his feet.

He is based in Knaresborough as far as I'm aware. PM me for details if you want to give him a try.
