We're all hacked off with the YO a fair bit, but it's because the yard is owned by the MOD!! Do they listen...NO! There are good points about having a yard on a Royal Marine Barracks, but there are downers too! All we can do is whinge about it!!! The yard managers do their best to get things sorted, the lastest thing is the yard is very slippery due to the concrete being very smooth, but the MOD won't do anything, it will cost too much money aparantly, 1000's they said! So I guess we have to wait until a horse or a person or both get badly hurt before they wake up and do something.
Gave a hungry horse some haylage and was summoned back from my nice warm house to remove what was left of it from stable. She also thinks i feed too much but i hate seeing hungry horses! Hense why it was me she summoned back. We have very different opinions on how to manage horses.
Sorry if that was me and my horses I would look for some where new. I will feed my horses what I see fit for their needs - and would not leave any horse with nothing to eat as it can cause all sorts of problems as we all know. My horse, my feed, my money she is taking as livery - her customer and her business - she needs to brush up her customer service skills or you need to vote with your money and feet.
you say you gave a hungry horse some haylage...was it your horse or your haylage.....??? If not YO is bang on the button, if it was and you are paying for the haylage, YO should butt out.
Our YO is a gem on the whole, I had my own yard for years so our ideas of doing things are very different, not right or wrong, just different. I look at it that if I am paying for forage etc, I give my horse what i want, and years of experience have taught me that no-one knows everything BUT I know what works for my horses and possibly it wouldnt suit other peoples.
As for being "ordered" to go and remove haylage, if it wasnt your horse or your haylage....nuff said!!
If it was yours to feed and your horse that was hungry and you paid for haylage, then would be promptly moving yards...

[/ QUOTE ] I'm presuming this is your horse? Is haylage included in the price of livery? Was it in a net or rack so any left would not be wasted? Is your horse over-weight?
it was the horse next door to mine who's owner works very long hours. It bites people as they go past with nets to their horses cos it is hungry and attacks the bars between our stables when mine goes to eat the net. All liveries are guilty of giving him a handful to keep him calm and not aggressive. We all pay for ad lib on a weekly basis. Think i coped for it tonight, have now calmed down and can possibly see YO's point.
perhaps someone ought to arrange with the owner to give him a net when the rest have theirs. Poor devil must get ticked off watching everyone else get their grub before him, but can see YOs point if everyone and his brother is 'chucking him a handful'
Ah - as its not your horse that is slightly different. Maybe you should speak to owner and arrange that he gets a haynet or soemthing to occupy him until she is there. As she does long hours she maybe completely unaware of his behaviour or she may have asked for him not to be fed.
That is what I would do - check she is ok with it and then you can tell YO its ok - problem solved.
I know where you are coming from, I too would be pretty miffed to see a horse standing in his stable day in and day out with nothing to eat. Hate horses without forage in their stables so i would probably do the same thing!
Doesn't make it completely right, but I know why you did it. Best thing is to speak to the owner and maybe everyone could offer to put in a haynet, so this horse does have ad lib hay.

[/ QUOTE ] Well then I can quite see the YO's point of view! It is not your place to feed a horse that doesn't belong to you! If you are concerned for the horse, or worried by his behaviour, then the best course of action is to discuss it with YO and agree a suitable plan of action. In fact, other owners chucking handfuls of haylage over the door are actually reinforcing the horse's aggressive behaviour!
I would suggest to the YO that she talk to the owner of the aggressive horse about the situation and devise a plan to solve the situation rather than some ad hoc approach by various passing liveries.
Ditto to the above. Maybe there is a good reason that tha horse does not have any nets in his stable.
Speak to the horses owner, and if she is happy to let you fill him a net then problem solved.
It is a hard one, as if he was skinney YO would be in trouble for not interfering, but if horse looks ok then she is in trouble for telling everyone to keep clear.
IMHO, any horse ept oin a stable all day cant be completly happy, but appreciates that it has to be done.
If the horse is disturbing yours I'd also see about blocking up the grill between them, or at least reducing it to a small window. At an old yard I did this with a bit of hardboard, drilled a few holes, and tied it up with baling twine. Not all horses like to see their neighbours, it sounds as if this could be doing both horses a favour.
You shouldn't feed someone else's horse, but nor should they be left too long without something to eat. So a responsible YO would come to some arrangement with the owner so that doesn't happen. It must be very stressful for this horse to see all the others being fed and bedded down for the night while he is left hungry.
