Has anyone ever tried it?
I've just had a 6 string heston arrive, My favourite straw is smashed up barley! Mr P saw the end of the bale and chucked it on a trailer without really looking! It's obviously one that the baler did a field swap and is actually half rape straw!
He's gone back to find more but i know they are getting low at this point, I've said I'm happy to use the good end and we could ratchet the other half up and get rid but that seems wasteful.
I don't think it would be any good as bedding but has anyone actually tried?

I used rape straw, years ago. I didn't choose it, it was all a local supplier had at the time. I wouldn't have bedded down anything with a thin coat/thin skin on it but the hard as nails, double coated cob I had at the time was absolutely the most disgusting, messy pig I've ever known so when she had to go on box rest I was about to have a nervous breakdown. It actually turned out to be the best bedding for her and I was really impressed with how absorbant it was, she didn't eat so it and always stayed fluffed up so it went so much further than everything else I tried (and I tried everything with her!) So I guess it all depends on the horses you need to use it for. I wouldn't put my old arab on it but I'd happily use it for my others if I needed to

Oh really? I'm suprised its absorbant, for some reason I'd assumed it would be the opposite. It may be usable then in needs be. Two ponies, one a yetti who tends to lie off the bed anyway, the other never lies down inside but is seriously wet.
The horses, maybe not so. Might not be the end of the world though!

I don't but that's in interesting idea for the future as I could in theory have as much as I want and I much prefer mucking out small/choppier beds so may see if I can borrow one and give that a try!

This morning's bale has in fact been replaced, I just went to have a look.
