Hi just wondering who has used rapeseed bedding and what you think of it? Im looking for an alternative to shavings as they are just silly expensive now although i do prefer them to other bedding ive tried, wood pellets, easi bed & straw, i hate traditional straw because of it being so dusty etc and they eat it thanks :)

I've just switched over to probed, it's a flax bedding but I absolutely love it! Dust free, soft, clean and smells lovely!

A friend of mine has been boarding her very dirty, messy mare at my place. She's been using rapeseed bedding for about 3 months now. While this is not a livery situation, I do muck out the mare before I go in for the night. I like the bedding. Each bale is very large and covers a substantial area in the 16' x 16' stable. It is very absorbent and banks up nicely. It is not dusty at all. I think she pays something around £6+ per bale.

I use probed and think it's good. Have always been a shavings girl but crazy prices forced me to change and I am happy with my choice even for our very wet 32 year old.

Rape straw is brittle and doesn't absorb very well, we dont use it on dairy for that reason I i wouldn't use it on the horses. I would go for barley straw, lovely stuff.

Isn't nedsbed made out of rape straw?
I liked that, a sack used to last me 10 days with rubber mats. Easy to muck out and cosier than shavings and smells better too. Only stopped using it cos the new yard provides straw.

Anyone have a photo of what this bedding stuff looks like delivered? I know what it looks like in the field and think it could be quite hard and sharp bits?

I've only used shavings and straw - but of course, many variations of those.

I use it, love it. Use the chopped up rapeseed, it's really absorbment, way more than shavings. Smells nice & nice big bales!

I use it, the bedwell one, but yes nedz do one and I think rapport and bliss are the same. Its tiny chopped up bits, lovely and soft and really absorbant. Smells amazing and you get tons in a bale! Have got a picture somewhere of the bed freshly laid if you want to see?

I use chopped rape straw aka Bliss and chopped cardboard aka Ecobed. Both great to work with, virtually dust free, rot down quickly on the muckheap so easy to recycle.....but the young Irish mare eats Bliss for Ireland and the cob pony eats Ecobed for England.......never seen anything like it, put them on the wrong bed and woomph, they chomp away like JCB diggers!

Thanks everyone - you all seem very positive about it :) ive been quoted £5.55 per bale and thats 60 bales delivered from Nottingham to Shropshire. I just wanted to see what everyones thoughts were before i go and order a load :) im getting it from Moor Road Shavings, they are on Facebook. Has anyone used their stuff?

hi! i use moor road shavings for all our horses, we absolutely recommend their bedding to all our clients as we own a riding school and all our liveries are using it. i have 60 bales delivered every other week (i have around 50 horses on the yard) its really absorbent and easy to muck out. also at £4.80 a bale i think its well worth it! and they deliver which is a bonus!!! :-) good luck everyone
