Ive posted this in Comp riders aswell, but though Id put it in here too.

Im trying to find out more about wrapping as I beleive this has been done to my horse b4 I bought him. Does anyone know of a web site where I can read up about this?

Rapping in the disgraceful practice of raising the bar just as the horse is about to jump it so that it hits their legs. It's meant to make them jump higher I think .

Personally I think the horse should stop the next time round, dump the rider and trample all over him/her.

Oh I totally agree with you, and becuase of this awful act of crulelty my poor horse is petrified when he hits a pole!.
I just wont to find out as much about it as I can really, so I can understand more why Archie is the way he is.
Its very sad and had me in tears when I saw how frightened he was.

Poor thing - how long have you had him? Hopefully in the long term he will come to trust you and build up his confidence.

Maybe it's worth doing some of those Parelli games with him. I don't know anything about it but if you could get him running and jumping along side you and see it was fun it might help. Not sure what else to suggest but good luck.

Ive had him 2 years now and bought him as a 4 year old from Ireland. He jumps beutifly, until he hits a pole or some time on landing he puts his head down and bucks. We only did a raised trotting pole the other night and he cuaght it and went metal, I went crashing to the ground and he was petrified. It was horrible to see.
Ill stick at it though, 4faulter is also helping me and he great, so I know we'll get there.

Oh you poor things (both of you). Although not the usual advice for a SJ'er, could you try some really good protective boots so he doesn't feel the poles so much? Obviously if it's in his head it probably won't help, but may be worth a try. Other than that, could you try & re-gain his confidence on the lunge - at least if he hits a pole he won't then get the additional shock of his rider getting dumped...

I presume he doesn't buck etc when he doesn't touch a pole - i.e. there's no pain issue n his back etc...

Ah I don't think your horse has been rapped

Babies and green horses often freak from the noise - if you go over trotting poles on the ground do they freak out when they hit them?

Best way is lots of ground pole work (I'd get pole pods / square poles to be on the safe side). Your horse need to learn that the noise is ok. A friend of mine had real troubles with her her huge 17hh being a total wus, so she put poles everywhere in his field and on entrance to his stable (with a feed inside) and he now happily clonks them!

My horse used to freak if he touched a pole too, and he has never been rapped, I jumped his first fence on him so know his jumping history! However he has got over it now, and is more than happy to put a few poles on the floor!

How did you work him through it?

TBH didnt really, was mainly on the lunge etc he got wound up and used to trot round snorting over poles!! he used to jump me off if he thought he would toch something, but just got less bothered as he carried on jumping more regularly, and realised the world didnt end if he hit anything. Keep everything easy and within his limits, put poles on the floor in the school in a normal sessin so he realises they arent going to eat him and they're no big deal!

My horse also freaks when she hits a pole, first time she hit a pole was a plastic practice fence at a show and she shot off in a huge bucking fit to the end of the arena. I was wary of jumping plastic after that. It just makes her extra careful and she has a paddy if she hits a fence
