Rare Breeds?

This is my 5 year old Cleveland Bay gelding in his clipped state... just starting to learn to work nicely (ignore the numpty rider ;) )

I've got a Hackney mare, apparently only 300 breeding mares in the country. They aren't for everybody, very much up and go sorts, but mine (hopefully) will be out show driving again this year.

To Cleveland bay owners:
I read some where that CB's can be quite temperamental/difficult horses...is there any truth in this?

I have never had a moment of bother with any of mine.. They are kind and very clever, inquisitive and willing to work til they drop for me.. I back and produce my own..

It's all about having a constant dialogue and building trust and respect.. Don't tell them to do something.. If they don't do it first time, let them think about it and make sure they understand what you want when you ask again.. Be the right temperament to work with the horse..

Aggression and force will get you nowhere..

No more temperamental than any other breed if you ask me! Most are complete sweethearts. BUT they are big, strong, intelligent horses so you have to respect that. They thrive on work. The more you give 'em, the better they get! They have busy 'doing' brains that are pretty much waisted if they are left stood in the field... I won't have any other breed now :)

They are very similar to the ID...

Couldn't have said it better myself!

I have backed and schooled my boy myself, he is away at the moemnt being schooled in order to keep him in work while my broken foot heals and he has been described as such a lovely boy and a complete sweetheart - love him!

I'm guessing where I read that, they mistook character for a difficult horse.
Thanks for the replies.
I've always loved CB's, they look like my ideal horse. The queen's CB's are lovely! :D

I WILL own a Suffolk or two one day, absolutely adore them.

Even better would be a win on the lottery so I could have a stallion and breeding mares to help preserve the breed!

Cleveland Bay - best bar none!!! (sorry if pics are massive) Totally stunning, moves and jumps like something else, and just the kindest souls ever.

So need a like button for this, completely and utterly true. Rushing and dictating will get you nowhere, trust and time are everything with such intelligent and sensitive horses.

I used to own a Suffolk X I do have a couple of rubbish pics somewhere, but they're the old fashioned type, so probably in a box:rolleyes:

Think big, short cannons, huge hard feet, enormous head and very, very orange!

He was such a dude and had the most amazing huge floaty trot. Probably from his Hanoverian dad though!

Gentle Warrior on here has a gorgeous Suffolk x cob.

Suffolks are my favourite heavy, I'd love a pure-bred.

I have a Lipizzaner too. I think they are counted as a rare breed as I am sure I read somewhere that there are only about 1000 in the UK. But if not, here is my foreign breed - 7yr Old Apollo

sorry if the picture is huge :D

OOOooh CBfan that is a proper horse.... Lovely !!

Clevelands and Suffolks are my faves,....but Im in Clydie country!

Ormiston Highlands at Newtonmore, stood a CB stallion for many years. I understand the proprietor was heartbroken when he died. He was never registered with the CBHS but I am fairly certain he was Mulgrave Royal out of Blackhall Lady Zara. When I was CB shopping I met two MR offspring both of wonderful temperament. My mare Acorn is his grandaughter.

I do know that Ormiston produced some useful hunter types crossing their stallion with Highland mares. I think you will find a fair few up on Speyside. (What a lovely place that is)

Got my photobucket working.

Here is one difficult/temperamental CB. My 17hh stallion. His mate who is in foal had a foot abscess and was on box rest, so we let him 'help' NOT with the mucking out. He had a choice of three fields but would not leave his lady. As you can see he looks a bit scruffy but there is no mistaking that kind eye - he was dead easy to back too.

Here is his daughter lightly backed aged 3 and turned away. This pic from last year. Long reined a few times. Saddle and bridle on, taught to stand still and this is 2/3rd time with rider on board.

And for anyone interested in my Shagya's a little fun You Tube with one of my mares and her colt, who is now an approved stallion. If you watch to the end you will see my doing Monty Roberts with my CB stallion. I am off camera and he is following me to the yard.
