Looks OK to me for a first time. A friend of mine always says the difference between a good clip and a bad clip is 2 weeks!!

ETA Having looked at the pic again am a bit confused about the square on his back. Too short for a blanket clip and wrong shape for a hunter clip!!
grin.gif

Looks fine to me

This is from someone who always gets her mate to clip for her....

....however OH is buying me a pair of Heinigers for my birthday so I will be in a clipping frenzy next weekend......full clip methinks
tongue.gif

I may do some stars on his bum if the mood takes me
grin.gif
(prepares to be showered with a hail of smelly yard boots...)

The square was going to be like a saddle patch, then I decided his kidneys would get cold
grin.gif

He is scrummy - this year he'll have a nice blanket clip I think, good luck Ed boy

Is that a built in fishtail saddlecloth?
grin.gif

Sorry, you should see my clipping, yours looks better than mine! Thats why I pay somebody to do mine, wouldnt dare go out otherwise.

Yours looks fine apart from the saddle patch you have left, needs to be a little smaller maybe

Not a bad first attempt at all. Well done.

Ohh I see we got a comedian!

hehe no it wasn't too bad and he did look like he was properly clipped, well, when he had a rug on!!
grin.gif

I think it's a really good first try!

It's just practice and confidence. Especially with lines, the quicker you do them the straighter they come out. If you managed to finish with straight edges, no lines and no chunks out of your horse then fab!

Mind, I have been caught out this year, a friend asked me to blanket clip her mare and OMG, can tell I am used to doing a full clip lol!

Took a few goes to get the blanket even lol, it was very worrying for a time!

Hey the hairs off, all limbs are still attached, you didn't electrocute yourself in the process, so for a first attempt then I'd be pretty proud of that!

Besides everyone needs to do a first clip and start somewhere, otherwise you'll never learn.

You'll know if suddenly your friends don't want to hack out with you or suddently start handing you exersises rugs to cover him up with
grin.gif
.....not that I'm speaking from experience of course
smirk.gif

Did you aim for a blanket clip and it kept getting smaller???
tongue.gif

Off with the lot, otherwise the fur will ultimately end up in your washing machine!

The hunting clip saddle patch pre-dates decent numnahs IMHO

The legs look ok but why have you not totally clipped out his head and ears? Hairy ears get wet - and, hence, VERY cold. If you wished to keep his kidneys warm, you should have left on "a blanket" - over his loins. The next time, if you clip him right out, put on your saddle and mark around it with chalk. Then you will get an unclipped outline which follows the lines of your saddle and does not look so much like a dressage numnah. Also, as he is not a TB, I would clip out his legs totally the first time and then leave them on for the next clips. Cannot see many tram-lines, so I would say "very well done" for a first effort. PS - NEVER clip in artificial light.

unless you have to clip in the dark in which case artificial light is quite handy.

oh and kitty I always do a half head, frank would look daft without fluffy ears.

Actually I did eventually because my YO wandered past and was like
"Jen what the **** clip his head off" "Oh wait just give me the sodding things!"
grin.gif

I can't clip on the yard as the hair will blow off in all directions and I get told off and or beaten with sticks for 'gingering' the whole yard.

The Kidney part was a joke
grin.gif
but point taken - this year he's having a blacket clip - any tips on doing the lines straight for that?

At least you didn't leave some ridiculous heart shaped piece of fur on his bum or anything naff like that lol I actually think it's very good for a first attempt and you could easily clip the fish tails off and make a smaller patch!

and I thought he was an angel

blanket clip (what I do most of the year!!)

chalk straight lines,
make sure bottom lines are level from behind
and wither line is level on top (I actually jump on him to chalk this one up)

think thats all, its easy really
smile.gif

Confession time..........L has taken over the clipping for the last few years,I'm not bothered,it stops me getting hair (SOOOO spiky!) in all sorts of unpleasant places! This time, I said,I'd really like to do some, on Small Ginger, prior to sale viewing. (Ok, so not good timing!) My blanket got wobblier, and higher, and more unlevel, until L very gently suggested that it really was irretrievable - hence Small Ginger now has first full clip in five years!! (and I'm banned!). Yours is great - I presume you're clipping for comfort, not showing? So what the hell! Practise makes perfect........although in my case, not!

The problem with artificial light is that tram lines, etc are not always noticeable - as shadows everywhere. A horse clipped in artificial light and then brought out into daylight can show up an embarrassing multitude of errors.
I know, due to someone insisting that I clipped out their pony at 8.30pm! Far easier to do it in daylight in the first place than have to get out the clippers AGAIN to adjust mistakes. You might be surprised just how handsome "Frank" would look without his fluffy ears - and he would be far warmer in the rain! Each to their own.
