RATS!

Hairy japanese b*stards! Had them at previous yards... I left a work top there one evening and the sods ate it! None at this yard so far, thank heavens.
 
Yes but numbers are going down thanks to the arrival of Matilde the champion all round vermin exterminating cat :)

She came from the Cats Protection and in her first two days caught the mice in the house (that we didn't know we had :o) then when let outside followed me to the compost heap, I lifted the lid and had enough time to think "gosh that's a big rat" and in she swooped and chomp game over :eek::cool:
 
Yep theres rats up my yard, the cat refuses point blank to catch them (personally i dont blame him!) They get poisoned every so often or the farriers dog has a killing spree, but can never fully get rid,ages ago I sat down to do my boot up and a rat actually shot out and ran across my lap :s dont think ive ever shifted so quick!
 
The wetter is gets the worse the problem will be, they are all being flooded out of the ditches and into the buildings.

I don't normally have much trouble but at the moment it's awful. Using Jaquar poison, red blocks, at the moment and they are feasting on them.

Can't beat a Jack Russell. A rat came into our flat afew months ago came face to face with the little fella. He won't be making that mistake again ;) His friends seemed to get the hint to as havn't had a problem since :D

I would have died I an phobic about them years ago H+H had a picture of a rat on the front I had nightmares for weeks .

In my field I have fox hole and for the first time ever it was filled with water but yes I just topped up the bait box with poison. They seem extra active at the moment.
 
I have a 3 jack russells. All 3 will snuff rats out in the barn, but just watch them run away when they find them!!
Yet, when my pet rabbit, chicken or duck escapes into the garden it doesn't stand a chance!
Useless dogs :(
 
i have been putting poison down for over a week now and they still munching! having to refill daily! didnt help that the farmer dumped cattle feed about 300 yards from my stables, cheers for that!!
had tiny problem last year but seriously being over run at the moment , hoping i can get on top of them soon :(
 
Sure I dont need to say--but will anyway--do be careful that the rat poison cannot contaminate your horses hay or feed.
Much prefer a cat or JR solution but if you are overrun then best to reduce numbers as you are doing, but dont allow cats or dogs to eat the ''bodies''
 
I won't use rat poison around the stables in the winter as too scared that it'll contaminate the hay or somehow get into stables. I live with them in the winter and then put loads of poison down as soon as horses are out 24/7.

Got two cats at great expense from the Cats Protection league purely for pest control as I can't personally stand cats; did everything they said about keeping them in for 6 weeks etc etc, feeding, got them vaccinated (brave vet!) and as soon as I let them out, they ******ed off up the road to the garage - ungrateful sods.

You are right of course, it is best to use proper bait boxes to prevent the blocks being removed.
 
I have the best deterrants - a lab, a spaniel, 3 lurchers and a rottie :D 0 rats.
Big ginger hoss has also been known to crush a few, I have a photo somewhere of a rat she beheaded :p
 
I had a rat at my yard, found its way into my tack room and peed over absolutely everything. Cost me a fortune getting all my rugs cleaned.

I am absolutely terrified of them, so went and got a couple of farm cats.

The day i arrived with the cats in the travel basket thingy, the rat ran across the yard right in front of me, thats the first and only time i saw it.

My bruisers Bob and Burt ( Bob is my avatar) do a fab job, they keep all furries at bay.:D

Had a major problem last year - we were inundated with them.
Having chickens doesn't help even though we keep all their feed in sealed containers at night.
They ate into various hen houses and killed several of the young birds.

We also have very good rat killing terriers but there were so many that it was impossible for them to get to the rats. Shooting them at night was good fun too.

Now we have double bait boxes down, they get topped up once a month and so far we haven't seen any rats lately.

I too had pet rats as a child, they are very intelligent creatures and very easily trainable.

Agreed as mean as I feel for shooting them, it is good fun!
