RATS!!

Mrs B,
who gave us the right to decide the fate of another animal ?

Is this another killing animals for meat thread??

NO it is the removal of an animals who bought the plague. I am not talking about pet rats, we are talking about vermin which is what they are. What gives me the right to Poisson or any other means of control an animal, who invade my yard???? Every Right since
1 It is my yard
2 It is my feed
3 I bought it
4 I have to chuck the feed out when they get in there peeing and pooing in the horses feed.
5 Find backs they ripped open

Sorry but if the choice is my horses health and care and a Rat. - There is no contest.

Sorry to read about the persons dog who died an excrutiatingly painful death from eating a poisoned rat. There's a definite lesson there for us all.

I'm on the fence about this, how far do you take it? Have you ever wormed your dog or horse? Maybe had to make the very painful decision to have an animal put to sleep. I don't think it is as cut and dried as it at first seems.

Im not talking about worming , vets visits etc. I don't think we have the right to take another animals life because we happen to class him as vermin or he is in 'our space'. I can think of many human beings who would benefit the planet if they were no longer on it but I certainly wouldn't eliminate them :)

But what about the worms? You brutally murder them if you worm your horse, poor little blighters, never stood a chance

Yards that admit customers or employ staff must have rodent control plans in place .
Rats can kill people and horses they carry dangerous diseases you can't be fluffy about them

Worst that happened to us was a day I went to look out some boots to wear for hacking from the pile of boots. I rummaged away, and felt furry boots. They were at the bottom of the pile, so I got a good grip and pulled, all the time thinking "I don't remember buying these!"......

Yep, in the dimly lit tack room I realised that I was gripping a recently deceased rat. We named him Rat-a-one-e.

Only took a couple of poison traps to smell the distinctive smell that was Rat-a-two-e.

Dratted thing had emptied the rat trap of the large poison blocks, and dragged them to his nest. Full of the things.

I reclaimed the blocks to re-bait the traps, binned the bale of hay, and have not seen one since.

Ugh, no regret in using poison here.

My OH also qualified as a mole murderer, and these days we have none of them either.

This is damage and I hope they choke on it seeing this in the morning, does not make me think aww poor rats, I hope they snuggled down kept warm in the feeds and made lovely imprints in the horses breakfast. I hope they had their fill of horse food and messed in it and releaved themselves. Now I can feed the horses the feed, but never mind I have to chuck out a whole bag of feed

I will feed them, nice blocks specially for them

Doesn't worming kill the worms, flea powder kills fleas etc?

They are horrid critters l don't like poison but due to the damage & disease they carry you sometimes have no option. l hate them & even more so after seeing my grandmother been cornered by one when l was young she had a large garden & lived next to a farm & she was sweeping some leaves in a corner & l saw this rat come out. l'm just glad she had a sweeping brush in her hand because she tossed it into the field when it jumped at her.

At my old yard there was a lazy cat that was a bad rat catcher, my YO resorted to getting someone in & they brought their jack russell. It worked because the number of rats decreased. l hope you manage to sort the rats out they are horrid creatures.

I was going to suggest this. I know someone who takes his JR ratting for the local Council.

I have also had a fatal problem with rat poison and a dog. Not good. I was also talking to a part time keeper 2/3 years ago about poisoning the rats, and he told me that the one that we had bought called Jaguar is so efficient (one meal and they are dead) that there have been cases of wild animals dying within a 2 mile radius of this product being used, and understandably there are concerns about it. I've not dared use it since, but my OH does go shooting them at night, and they do seem to have reduced in numbers. However, I have it on good authority that peanut butter mixed with bi-carb of soda, rolled into small tasty treats kills them. I've not tried it yet but will if I need to.

I have also known someone who thankfully pulled through but he was very seriously ill with Weils Disease. He does however suffer from a very compromised immune system now.

I have no issue poisoning them. I also keep hand gel at the yard which I use after I have done my haynets and feeds even though at this yard, thanks to our amazing little cat I have only ever seen one mouse and that was dead in her mouth!

wow

how do you serve it up, out of interest

I put a little smudge on the area of the snap trap for bait. They can't steal it like they do the chocolate buttons. Nothing with peanut butter last night but a very small one in the electric trap.
I saw Mr Big yesterday so its irritating he is still around and hasn't gone for peanut butter
