Wish me luck, looking at a Rav 4 and Rice Trailer this morning, very excited / nervous. Both old and very well used but low mileage (Rav 4), New Floor (alu/wood/rubber) in trailer so I am hoping they are both worthy of my hard earned mulah. Any tips??
 
Old Rice trailers tend to be rather heavy, you need to look very carefully at how heavy it is, add on the weight of your horse/s, yourself, any passengers and all the gear that goes with you then take a look at the kerb weight of the Rav4.

Sorry to put a dampener on your dream but suspect that the Rav4 will not be heavy enought to cope with the weight of the trailer safely.

This post was left a little late really, If you are expecting a Rav4 to tow a Rice trailer comfortably with one horse on let alone 2 I think you will be in for a disappointment. It is not heavy enough & certainly doesn't have the power needed. When it's full laden I think yoiu will experience problems. Sorry

A RAV can only tow 1.5t or 1t if its the 1.8 from '02.

Unless its a modern Europa Rice with lightweight materials its likely to be around 1t

So that leaves 500kg or less for one horse & equipment - if you have a porky cob or anything over 14hh you'll be overweight.

You can never tow 2 horses and IMHO its very unsuitable for the job.
 
Have found more out. Looking at Ifor Williams Europa trailer - RAV 4 2.0L GX - Does this help my cause!? Thanx for advice so far - You've saved me losing a deposit, unless any new information means I can return!
 
If its the Rice Europa its 850kg unladen, if an Ifor Williams 505 (assuming not the 510!) its 905kg

So your horse can be no more than 595kg with an ifor - looking at your cob in your signature I think its unsuitable for your needs!

Seriously you'd be better off with a heavier 4x4 as the RAV's are very expensive to insure apart from the major drawback of being over / close to maximum tow weight.
 
Yep, agree with everyone else. RAV's just aren't towing vehicles. If you do some searches there are threads here that can give you some ideas on what would do the job.
 
Was at Myerscough today and there was a Rav4 towing - it had to be towed out of the field by a tractor - it just didn't guts to get out. The landrovers and my shogun just ate the mud up!! I have towed one pony, legally, with a BMW 320d tourer, which is better than the Rav4 - but bought the Shogun because of fields and mud and getting a second horse, and feel so much safer now.
