Pip our Lancashire Heeler puppy will be 6months old shortly and my daughter and her boyfriend want to put her on the raw diet. Atm she is fed fish4puppies with sardines added twice a week.

Can anyone devise a raw diet for Pip please, apparently the dog trainer has told them its ok as long as you add vitamins which I didnt feel was necessary but I dont know anything about the raw diet.

My pup is fed JWB and has started raw every other day for her weight and appetite really :) Im a wimp though and find it rather overwhelming! I started with lamb mince, chicken wings and I have some tinned fish which she can try next time. From what I understand - you need to have bone in the diet but not a cows weight bearing limb :) and also tbh.. pretty much anything goes! not too much pork ( i cant remember why :( ) and not too much offall as its rich..! the one thing that confuses me is how much to feed ? x

I am wary of trying Pickle on raw diet, purely because he hoovers up his food so fast I don't think he would grasp the concept of chewing bones. He does have some of the pet mince from our butcher which has offal and bone ground up in it and loves that. I weighed him the other day and he is about 4.5 kg.

Wow he is growing fast and catching Pip up, she rules my 2 dogs and I cant believe how they allow her to get away with murder. They will pick up her toys and she will rush over to them barking and they will drop it for her, she dosnt really want it she just dosnt want them to have it. They will growl and Darcy snapped at her but Pip just ignored it and she is definately going to be top dog in this house-hold.

We have been giving Pip the odd bone but she dosnt rush her food unlike Darcy who will hoover it up, the dog trainer told me to throw her food on the lawn and make her work to find it, has definately slowed her down.:D

Pups require up to 10% of expected adult weight (adults get 2-3% or more depending on metabolism). Pups can eat what adults have except in terms of size of bones/lumps: obviously cater to size of dog.

The ratio is 10:10:80 bone, offal, meat, although some people only feed 5% offal due to it's richness and the likelihood of it causing sloppy poo. I feed by eye and add/take away bone/offal according to consistency of poo.

Start with chicken wings. Hold them so pup gets the idea that he needs to chew, not inhale.

Progress to lumps of meat and small drumsticks. Introduce one type of protein at a time over a week or so. That way, you see if something causes a reaction.

Any meat is fine, you don't need to freeze meat you buy in Britain usually, although I always advise pork be frozen and rabbit if not farmed bunnies (worms). Alternatively, worm the dog after rabbits.

Try to source green tripe, it's a staple for many, but not desperately essential.

My usual menu is green or lamb tripe, chicken wings or pieces (£2 a kg in frozen section of Sainsbury: that's about the max I'd pay for dog food), pork ribs, sprats, lamb breast.

Expect some vomiting and diarrhoea while the dog's stomach acid adjusts. Don't panic if small pieces of bone pass through and are visible in the poo for a while.

This is epic but so helpful: you don't need to go past the first twenty pages (). http://www.petforums.co.uk/dog-health-nutrition/111437-raw-feeding-everything-you-need-know.html

Raw food companies and price comparisons plus what supermarkets do are in the raw feeding thread I got stickied above. ^^.

I've been raw feeding for a year and researched LOTS so ask any questions. :)

I haven't gone the whole hog, but pup gets fish4dogs as well as Natures Own raw food cubes - found them in the freezer at pet shop. She loves them and has 7 cubes for breakfast and 7 for tea. Currently on the chicken, but started her on the tripe, heart (and other stuff) mix - they have lamb and beef too. Its an easier way for us to handle to raw side of things as myself and OH puke at the thought of handling anything else raw.

That sounds a quite civilised way to go, it is very tempting with perhaps added chicken wings & legs and some fish.

It is pretty easy, which is good and pup seems good on it. I defrost 14 blocks overnight. She bounces around like a nutter when she sees her bowl!
