Im not talking about those of you who feed carcasses etc, Im talking about those of you who , like me, buy minces and prepared raw products from the likes of DAF, Berriewood, Natural Instinct, Raw2PAw, Prize Choice etc...

It struck me that if the regulations for the the human food industry have allowed for contamination, how the heck do you know that what you are putting in your dog's bowl is, chicken, or lamb.. or whatever it its supposed to be, but more concerning... how do you know the meat is suitable for consumption and not contaminated with something harmful, eg bute, or worse. Interested in thoughts...

Same issue for dry food I would say, lord knows what is in it, either!!

The guy I get my minces off, well, tripe is tripe :p and I have seen him feeding the chickens into the mincer and them coming out the other end and getting bagged. As for drugs, etc, who can tell?

I know the guy who produces my coarse mince, good stuff and I trust him.The chook carcases, well I cannot fault them. But from the big producers?Mmmm, not so sure.

I work in a pet shop and we stock natural instinct - they welcome people to the factory where it's made and will happily do tours so you can see exactly how their products are made.

On the recommendation of someone on here (sorry, I really cant remember who, I think the user name was 3 initials, L something something?) I have started using Manifold Valley Meats (MVM).

Yep I trust them to sell me something that is what it says it is, I believe that they produce all their minces on the premises from stock held on the premises which kind of reduces the margin for confusion :D

As far as drugs etc are concerned, I dont have any knowledge but then realistically none of us do unless we feed raw that we have raised and slaughtered ourselves?

I've been wondering the same. I will stick to what i feed though as i can't guarantee normal dog food isn't also contaminated and least it's only a part of their diet that is mince, they have lots of chicken wings and necks too.

Oh yes, and I know who caused that hoo ha - she posted to say that her chicken feet had scorched feet yada yada yada, but she posted on the MVM delivery co-ordination group FB page? So when she was told that wasnt the right place to post and to contact MVM themselves so they could discuss it with her, she got all stroppy

She hadnt actually bothered to contact the company at that point, she was posting wild accusations about them instead

Yes, I do trust their labelling - simply because the vast profits/mark ups are not there with pet quality meats. At the end of the day in any case, were I to get horse meat in my Berriewoods order instead of lamb or beef, it is certainly not going to do my boys any harm. After all horses that are euthanised by humane destroyer go to the local hunt for hounds, whereas I am a huge horse lover and would never choose horse meat on a menu, I certainly have no problem with my boys eating horse, although as I say, I wouldn't deliberately pay for meat for them knowing it was horse.

This is why I have stopped using landywoods, the turkey wings were getting harder and bigger to the point I can't even imagine what size the bird must have been, and the tripe has changed also or seems less grassy as kept finding grain bits. Either way I don't think their meat was British, using MVM but not 100% satisfied with them either atm basically worried they would be unreliable, first order was £80 but only got half of that order because of supply problems. Just thought first order, new customer only half of what I wanted.
