Raw food and camping...

I wonder why meat from farm animals seems to be more dangerous than natural raw? When I think of the stinking rotten stuff my labs can hoover up on a walk and never show any ill effects other than a slight windy bum. It isn't the risk of bacteria that put me off raw.

Indeed GGD. I've known of dogs die in freak accidents that you just can't mitigate for.
My dog has eaten the most disgusting, skanky, old, dead things and lived to tell the tale. My last dog couldn't tolerate any meat in any form. My dog before that lived to 14, eating glorified muesli.
In an ideal world, I'd still feed all raw.

Haha, technically it's 'glaping' as it's in a hut thing rather than a tent but yes, I imagine it'll be chilly! Cheap though ;)

Rhosilli is just down the road from me, and I think I've figured out where you're staying ;). Are you taking D? They do horsey B&B just over the road and the riding is fantastic.

Define minuscule LW? I don't think data (not anecdotal) that exists suggests it is so minuscule as to not require any consideration before making that decision. Maybe that comes from just dealing with bacteria a lot in life.

I don't think anyone has suggested anything in life is risk free, if anyone is aware of the microbiological issues of any type of food processed and not it should be me! Even chocolate is a salmonella risk fgs! But as with any risks I think it is about informed choices and it is clear that not all of the raw feeding population are as informed as others and not being informed is probably where the risks start to increase. I find it a bit unsettling that the internet is full of opinion pieces on feeding raw but I am yet to find one that actually challenges what is in the scientific press.

And yes I know science and data isn't the be all and end all but I do think if you are writing a piece you shouldn't discount it out of hand but challenge it properly. Hopefully if the number of supporting vets is increasing they might care to channel their inner scientist and sort some data themselves.

Clodagh it is part down to husbandry, part down to the susceptibility of animals bred just to produce more rather than any bacterial resistance. It obviously depends on the type of animal and storage of the meat too but I fear I might start getting too geeky if I start on meat packaging :D but yes I'd worry less about manky rotting roadkill than I would a lot of other meat products from that point of view.

Anyway fairly **** funeral day today so it's been interesting but I'll remove my geekiness from the table. As I said no dog here but I live in hope and like to be informed :p

We're staying at the horse B and B place in one of their 'huts' but not with D. She's still struggling with weight and I decided that I'd rather not risk her dropping more and also that a holiday with the dog was probably enough stress! Lol. Will hopefully take D over in the summer though as the riding does look incredible!
