RAW food

I have been thinking about trying feeding raw food just to the little ones (at first anyway) I was very happy with the dried food they were on but can no longer easily get it and the only place locally with a big variety of different types is a Pets at home about 25 minutes away but with current long term road works can take over an hour.
They don't sell anything else in the shops I visit that I'd be interested in feeding- It's all Bakers and Pedigree chum type.

So I started reading about raw feeding and decided that it might be worth trying. I think at first I'd rather try a purpose made food rather than popping to Tesco and trying to do it from scratch. However when I went to a stockist to look its in big blocks of frozen meat- They had several types and brands. How do i defrost? I looked at feeding amounts and I'd only need a small amount each day. I thought it would come in small blocks or something so you could defrost a meals worth at a time.
I worry if i defost a whole pack it will just be wasted.
I'd like to add raw bones for teeth what would be best there? Lady down the road feeds chicken wings.

As a puppy my dog seemed sensitive to chicken so I've avoided that since and prefer fish based food, he gets treats though and has never had a problem with anything since. I really worry about tooth health.

Yes/No? any brands to look at or steer clear of? Would it be difficult to balance my own mix?

I feed Bunny raw food - living on a beef farm that does field to plate catering it is readily available! We do 80% beef, 10% offal and 10% mixed veg. We mince it all together and then portion it with an ice cream scoop and freeze the scoops on a big tray and vac pack in 3 portion packs and freeze. I can then take out a pack at a time to defrost. She also gets beef bones regularly. She was really fussy about her food which is another reason we tried raw and she loves it - it goes in a flash. She seems to be doing well on it - the vet is always happy with her weight, condition, teeth etc.

That's handy! So is it ok to use one meat source? The 80/10/10 ration sounds way less complicated than I'd imagined.

@HopOnTrot- Is that raw? I'd not even thought to look on Amazon! Of course they sell absolutely everything!

It does depend on what you read - Some things I read talked about starting with one source and then varying and others say that it is fine to use the same source. We use mainly beef but do vary too - for example if we make burgers from other meats we will keep some by and make up some food for Bunny. Although I don't suppose it is too much different than always feeding a dog the same 'flavour' canned or dried food.

Edited to add that different sources will quote slightly different ratios but they are all in a similar ballpark from what I could see when I initially researched.
 
I feed raw. I use the complete minces from Cotswold raw (the Active 80/20 ones). I leave it out to defrost overnight and then decant into a tupperware to keep in the fridge, each tub last 3 days and this keeps it fresh enough in the fridge. I tend to buy the multipacks of 4 flavours (chicken, turkey, beef and lamb). I only feed raw as it’s about the only thing she tolerates and does well on so my main criteria was that it had to be FEDIAF approved so that I know it’s balanced and I don’t have to think any more about it. I also add a BARF vitamin and mineral supplement for good measure.

Its awful quality. My dogs wont touch it.

Durham animal feeds deliver to me and I'm nearish to you. They do lots of complete mixes. Just defrost it and stick the remains in a tub in the fridge and its lasts 4 days easily. I do a mix of complete minces and tripe and organ meats which I combine with boney stuff like chicken wings and pork ribs.

To start with pick something simple like a complete chicken or turkey mince and feed that for a week, then add in one new protein type at a time keeping an eye on their poos while you do it. The more variety the better but I dont sweat it.

Mine look amazing. Their coats glow, they have good teeth even at 9. Their poos are little tiny dry nuggets. They have no "doggy smell" and the youngest who is sharp and tricky is so much more settled and easier on raw.
 
I use Naturaw. It comes in 500g packs and is 80:10:10. You can get one with veggies included but I just buy frozen broccoli and beans and add them. I defrost it in the fridge, rotating 3 at a time, i.e. I take another one out each time I finish the top of the 3 packs. It comes in packs of 16 though and I get 5 or 6 different meat mixes, but you need lots of freezer space or else you would have to find a stockist. My dog loves it and seems very healthy and happy - plus she has very clean teeth as a bonus.
