Hi,

Has anyone had anything like this before? The inside of my mare's hind legs.
Its just started in the past couple of days and the skin has just peeled away. The flies have been really bad - not sure if they would cause this though?
Mare isn't irritated by them and it isn't sore to touch although putting cream on - she lifts her leg non-threatening - but the cream is cold.

How would you treat this? Any ideas as to the cause?

Other mare is fine and is more bothered by flies than this one.

Many thanks

How old is she hun? She's a grey and I don't like the look of that so I'd give some basic self treatment for say 5 days (gently clean it, apply lots of a good quality vet gel) then if no improvement I'd get the vet out.

Looks like some sort of allergic reaction, I'd smother it in Boots nappy cream not sudocrem (its too drying) or gel as BOF has suggested, then vet if it doesn't improve.

Skin problems in greys are always worrying......As BOF states, if no improvement in a few days get your vet to have a look.

My big grey has something similar, starts around May and stays until Autumn. The vet had a look last week and she thinks it is a reaction to fly bites, despite him being lathered in repellent and wearing a rug, and being carefully washed off after work :( We are putting Fuciderm cream on and he is on some antihistimines which appear to be helping. He is a very sensitive TB: a scrape becomes life threatening, a bang becomes a major trauma - he's just that type

I'd speak to your vet as it looks very sore and open and you don't want a secondary infection setting in. Hopefully it won't be anything sinister. Good luck x
