Hi all!

This may be a question that has been asked before but....

If you feed raw, do any of you do a starve/fast meal/day/or more?
My boy is quite small so when feeding bones I often miss a meal or two depending on how full he is looking.
I currently give him lamb necks & lamb spines (used to do chicken wings but we have since found out he is allergic so no more!) and he weighs about 6.5kg.

I have 1/2 lamb head eyes, tongue, brains and all :o to give him outside when the weather gets warmer (if it ever does:rolleyes:)and I am trying to decide whether to get a saw and chop into 3/4 smaller pieces or if to let him gorge like they would have done in the wild, and stop when he's full? My worry is he wouldn't stop  and will get an uncomfortable distended tum

Gorge like they would in the wild? We have changed dogs and made them domesticated so I don't think this applies anymore. But it would be wise to give something smaller, if only because it will go 'off' if it is not eaten and could give your dog stomach troubles. I feed raw and use a %age of dogs weight to decide on the size of a meal - bones are extra. Its hard to calculate what weight of food they get off a bone. Although it can keep them occupied ( and help clean teeth) it is probably not a huge amount. Maybe continue your usual feeds but give a little less when you give bones. I agree that they tend to eat and eat so maybe restrict the time they have a bone ( or your skulls!) and keep them cold in the fridge or freezer for another time? You could always check out the suppliers website (Natural instinct?) for guidance

I know some people let them eat a certain amount and then take it away, freeze and get it out another day (it's safer for dogs to re freeze meat, they cope better with that than people).

I don't do gorge/starve because I prefer a routine and I would get no peace if I missed a meal! If it suits your dog, then I guess why not.

I don't fast mine, but they have days when they get less - I normally feed chook carcasses everyday as a base for anything else I'm giving, but on bone days, depending on how meaty the bones are, I miss out the carcasses.

Last night for example, they had 2 carcasses, veggies, eggs and live yoghurt, tonight they've got very meaty bones, and that's all they'll get.

I know one person who fasts his dog, he is in lovely nick but is as fat as a fool! :o
I'm not against fasting, I have days where he gets very little or misses one meal but never nothing. If he misses food on a track or in training, then he misses it.

I gave all mine 1/2 a lamb head each (bought from natural instinct) and they wolfed them down. I didn't starve them just gave them a bumper meal as it was a nice dry day and they spent hours in the garden with them! As it took them all day to eat, rather than breakfast and dinner, that day it was just the lambs head.

Thank you for your replies!!

Cant quote on my ipad...Moppett, I got mine from NI too! I think I shall see how he gets on, if he grazes slowly on it over the day then I shall let him keep it.

otherwise I shall re-freeze as you say cinnamontoast, I also think Pepe would have a fit if he missed a meal.. I will feed as normal the next day but obviously less in quantity.

Thanks again and I will take some gruesome pics to show you ;)

My dogs have no routine some times they get no walk but spend most of the day eating, sleepinf and digesting ( pigs head, turkey carcass including neck etc) next day small token meal.

Don't do it so often now as Buster my OES cannot do the above he just gets poorly.
Have never needed to take a meal off mine. But would prob just put in covered container and feed next morning.

I feed my jack russell raw and she will just get a small meal if she has a had a large one previously.
Like toffee44 I have no routine she is not always walked I have a huge property and she is out most of the time so walking is not always necessary.
