Morning

I was wondering if you can help me at all. I work in Special Needs and am going to be working with a little girl who has global difficulties. Communication is minimal but she can hold herself up and is very sense orientated - she loves flashing lights, clapping, changing pictures (TV, cinema) etc. We would like to see how she reacts around ponies & horses (we think it will be a good reaction!) - perhaps a small sit on a pony and walk around a school and lots of opportunity to pat them, feed them etc. Obviously the RDA would be the obvious point of contact so does anyone work with the RDA in Surrey (we are in Woking/Guildford area but I am more than happy to travel if she enjoys it and it benefits her)? Is there anything I should be aware of - Do they cater for children with her disabilities? Does anyone have any information?

Thanks very much.

Hi, this isn't about the RDA but if you were to contact Wendy at the Holistic Horse and Pony Centre in West Horsley/Ockham she might be able to help as she does a bit of riding for disabled kids.

I thought there used to be RDA in Ockham (not the holistic centre) but if you call this number 0845 241 6304 its apparently the region number for Surrey so they can help.

If you get stuck pm me. We have a really lovely fellow livery on the yard with a sec A who is well used to being man handled. I can always ask her but am equally aware that there is no one on our yard who has the experience or qualifications to deal with a specials needs case. My old TB was roped in this by complete accident and was a totally different horse with the girl in question and it made her day so happy to help if I can.

I ran a marathon to raise money for my local RDA not so long ago. It's the Bookham and Horsley branch. Their contact number is on the RDA website. They are fabulous and i think that they do rides every wednesday and sometimes at weekends.

There is also Rocking Horse at Shey Copse (old Woking Road in Pyrford) but they usually have a really long waiting list.

If you get stuck, I do have an old small fuzzy (has done RDA on occasions in the past) which you could bring child to see & touch - just to see what the 1st response is. Pony is completely retired these days, but still loves tlc & is very very good with children such as the one you mention.
