Just thought i'd post on here, and see if anyone would take this up, as horsy people you'll be amazed at the difference you could make!

RDA (riding for the disabled) Groups are always desperate for volunteers, as people come and go from uni etc they always need extra people.

I volunteer at a group and have been doing so for 4 months now, it is by far the most rewarding thing I have ever done, I have now gone as far as volunteering my horse.

So if you think you could spare even an hour a week, you could make a massive difference. Simply go on http://www.rda.org.uk/rda-near-you/locations and phone a group near you.

Thanks

Definately worth doing - I've been a volunteer for 8 years now and have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it . Knowing I have made such a huge difference to someones life, for a few hours of my time, makes it all worthwhile :-)

I been a volunteer since the start of this year and just love it! There has been a smile on my face when you see the riders just loving every minute of it!

Thanks for the link. This is something I have been thinking of doing for ages, so you have given me a reason to phone as I now have the info!
I think my mare, Blaze, would also be suitable for disabled riders. Do the RDA come to assess them?

Yeah I was the same, someone on here inspired me to call and I'm so glad they did :)

Horse wise each group is different, so best to phone your local group, agree to go along and discuss it with them when you go :)

On Sunday my horse is moving to my local RDA on a 6 week trial. Fingers crossed that he will be happy - he loves attention so I think he will throughly enjoy himself. :D

debsg - one of ours became an rda pony a local centre took him on loan to assess its quite a process but he ended up having a great 2nd career and was kept like a prince and adored by many :D

Well done, I have been going nearly two years now. I started taking my daughters outgrown pony ,now on loan to one of the families that I met there, now I take her current pony and my sons 6yr old has just started training. Because he is young we have taken it really slowly and he went the first week and was just led around and round mounting block and see how he reacted to the noise. He was perfect even when some of the younger children got excited. Last week he was ridden by one of the experienced lads on the second group , no problems so next week he will do a bit more.
let us know how you get on our group are a lovely friendly bunch with a wealth of knowledge that is great to be able to tap into.

To all who are thinking of volunteering with an RDA group, please go ahead and do it :) Sis and I did this nearly thirty years ago  We are still involved with that group. We no longer have time to go to the weekly sessions, but Sis is still on the committee and we go to all the 'events', we are looking forward to the Father Christmas visit :) Just be warned that it is addictive and you may well get dragged into all sorts of other things. As a result of our RDA group leader we have stewarded at a local show for nearly as long as we have known the RDA group, we have fence judged and timed for hunter trials and been invited to judge a fair few times at other shows :D we also press gang others to go and volunteer as well :D
