I have jumped it a couple of times. It was a nice enough fence but it's hard to say whether it will improve safety without having seen the quality of the data that was gathered, and the quality of the analysis and decision-making that follows

afaik it has only caused one horse fall so far, and that was Lissa Green i think.
i'm not too sure of the usefulness of it tbh. i don't really see what use it is to know how hard horses hit fences, etc.
the trouble is the BE's faithful adherence to the Hartington Report's final conclusion, that we/they must take all possible steps to prevent horse falls. i think that's like saying that the secret to safe driving and no more deaths on the roads is to prevent all car crashes. it just ain't gonna happen... horses can turn over even if they don't touch the fence (overjump behind and tip themselves up.) i've seen two recent vids on here of HHOers jumping tyres while xc schooling and having a full rotational. horses will fall because horses make mistakes, riders make mistakes, horses slip, etc etc etc. prevention just is not possible imho, and i think BE would be far better spending their effort on rider education and rider protection, not on the absolutely unattainable holy grail of preventing horse falls... just my twopenneth worth!

I think anything done to improve safety is a good thing. The study is a good idea and I think anaylsis of the force at which horses contract fences is vital in order to constantly develop flangable (yes I cannot spell but the new pins that break if you give the fence a wack!!) pins and improve fence construction. I do agree it wont stop horse falls but it would help reduce the severity of accidents.

Im also sure the data collected could be used to educate people - im sure the images captured could be used to show different riding over the fence - IMO far more useful and in face safer than the other safety video attempt. I do think the video is a good idea it however needs improved to help develop it.

I have to agree

I think that it is more important that riders are taught to fall in a safer way i.e. by rolling away from the horse and tucking in arms and legs than trying to prevent horses from falling. I don't think it was a complete waste of money though as if we learn one important thing from it then it has been worth it

It will be useful if they use the data to create computer generated models of horses rotating. They will then be able to analyse how horses fall and how best to protect riders. The company I work for have said they can do this.....
