hi
i am thinking of changing from straw to deep litter bed ie shavings and poss a little sawdust. would welcome any info and how to set the bed up and best way of mucking out stable is 10by 9 and horse is a 14.2 hh mare

I would advise starting with a deep bed and fairly large banks, then depending on how often the wet is taken out and the muckiness of the horse gradually pull the banks down to the middle to cover the wet, and replace the banks with new shavings.
And i probably wouldn't have any sawdust in there as its a pain to muck out and not great for your horses lungs! :)

Hi, I've deep littered for years as it just suits my horse.

I start with a good deep bed of shavings which I just dont take any wet out of. Dont disturb the wet bottom either if you can at all help it. After a week or so when there seems to be a base I chuck all the top dry layer up the walls and make sure the base is level. Over time your base should get compacted. I tend to take layers off the base if it gets too thick and keeping it level us important if your horse is standing on it.

I have kept bases in the whole winter.

Hi,
My deep litter shavings bed is lovely. At the bottom there is a bit of deep litter straw then some sawdust then quite a lot of shavings. Only take the poo out. Put a bag of shavings in a week at once then pull down from banks as I need it.
Takes about 5 mins to muck out using shavings fork and throwin poo against banks rearrange bed slightly. Bed doesn't move even if horse rolls and stuff
